Broken Down: Catalogue’s breakdown yesterday appeared to be serious and the last has probably been seen of the 10-year-old gelding. He was going exceptionally well when he broke down and his rider, A. E. Ellis, was confident he would have been on hand at the finish. Not His Form: Old Bill suffered from stomach .trouble on Wednesday, but as he appeared to have recovered yesterday morning it was decided to start him in the Wellington Cup. His display that all was not well with him, and, in addition, the firm ground yvas against him. He may be missing from the remainder of the meeting unless the track becomes soft.

Best Since Gloaming? There was a persistent report in Wellington on Wednesday that Kindergarten had been sold for 7000 guineas to go to Australia and that he would not be produced in the Wellington Cup, but taken straight to his new home. It was learned yesterday that there had been an inquiry for him on behalf of an Australian buyer, but the matter had not gone any further. Kindergarten was /nominated for the big events on the two remaining days at Trentham, but will not race again at the meeting. His win yesterday substantiated the claim of those who saw him at Ellerslie’that he is the best 'three-year-old seen out since Defaulter, and many consider he will have .as good a record if not better than the Canterbury horse. Others consider he is the best young horse since Gloaming. WELLINGTON RACES.. TELEGRAPH TO SIR BEAU. WELLINGTON, January 16. NOTES ON THE RACING [special to “star.”] WELLINGTON, January 16. Happy Ending, a four-year-old by Beau Pere from Termination had a comfortable win in the Trentham Highweight. After Namesake and Great Night had piloted the field on to the course proper, Kotua took charge, but was soon challenged by Happy Ending, who won going away. Black Musk, always well up, was a close third, three lengths in front of Martene. The favourite, Iceland Spar was slow away, and was one of the rear division throughout. He did not seem to be able to strike out at any part. Won Easily: The Wellington Stakes was won in an effortless manner by Burra Sahib, a bay colt by Bulandshar from Provence, a daughter of Hoy, dam of several good winners. He is owned by his breeder, Mr. F. Ormond, and is trained by S. J. Reid, who, incidentally, is seriously ill, at Hastings. The inside horses all got tangled up with the slow working barrier and two of them, Pay Roll and Salutation lost valuable ground. Prince Plato led on to the course proper, but a furlong from home was passed by Burra Sahib, who carried on to win by a wide margin. Salutation attracted attention by a brilliant run which gave her second money from Prince Plato. ißy Roll, Kentucky, and Golden Moon were next. Won Comfortably: Several horses in the Apprentices Plate suffered at the start, and three of them, King’s Toast, Gold Nugget, and Cheerful Lady were almost hopelessly left. The English-bred colt, Parchment by Papyrus, led from the early stages, and was only collaret in the last furlong. Rakanui cam from the middle of the field in th

straight, and gained the front half a furlong from the post, to win comfortably from the favourite, Blandishei-, who narrowly beat Dainty Dell, with Parchment only a head away. Talenta and War Credit were next. Outclassed Field: Monetary ran to the front a furlong from home in the Fitzherbert Handicap, and outclassed the opposition, winning without any trouble from Imperium and Fleche D’Or. Willow Wood, always handy, was half a head away, just in front of Palfrey, who led on to the course proper. The winner is by Paper Money from Silver Ring’s half-sister, Kakara, Imperium is a brother to Dannevirke, a winner in Melbourne. Favourite Succeeds: Kindergarten was sent out a shortpriced favourite for the Wellington Cup, and justified his position by one of the easiest wins in the history of the race. After Schoolgirl had led early, and slowed up the field for three furlongs, Orelio went to the front, and was still in charge entering the straight from Wardress, Belle Cane, Schoolgirl, Kindergarten, and Little Robin. Kindergarten had drawn past the leaders half a furlong from home, and went on to win, going away. A close struggle for second money resulted in Belle Cane securing a narrow verdict from Serenata, who finished with a brilliant dash over the last furlong. Orelio was half a head away next, with a gap to Little Robin, and Schoolgirl. Enrich, The Ring, Wardress, and Gladynev followed. Royal Chief was well back, and the last to finish was Catalogue, who was well up three furlongs from home, but broke down. Hard Struggle: Circular Note gave L. J. Ellis his second win for the day, when he won the Ruapehu Hack Handicap. Lord Midas led on to the course proper from Black Majestv, Augment, Leighnor, and Circular Note. Leighnor was in charge a few chains from the post, but, in a hard struggle, Circular Note got up in the last stride to narrowly beat Augment with Leighnor, a close third, a head in front of Last Acre. Squeers, Omapo, and Lord Midas were next.

Sir Beau’s Sprint: Sir Beau completed a strongly supported combination by winning the Telegraph Handicap. In spite of starting from the outside rail, he was not far from the leaders, Density, Zest, Doria, and Black Thread, entering upon the course proper. Density did not last long, and Doria also failed to carry on. Sir Beau soon drew to the front to win without pressure from Black Thread, who narrowly beat the fast-finishing Duvach. Hearth was a length away in front of Arvakur, Kathbella, and Doria. Outsider Wins:

The Anniversary Handicap was won by an outsider, Gay Mimic, owned and trained in Gisborne. He was in third place entering the straight, and when the two leaders weakened he ran to the front. Siglow came with a late challenge, but failed to get up. Red Cat, who led from the early stages, was a fair third, a length in front of Pleading. The staunch favourite, Gayest Son, was next. Trench Fight was withdrawn owing to soreness.

Gatwick, dam of Cynic, was got by Logan Pointer from Precision, whose dam, Kildase, was by Kilcheran, a son of Seaton Delaval and Idassa. Ironside, a high-class pacer, is by Wrack from Gatwick. Cynic should reach a high standard.
