Thousands of shoppers in Fifth Avenue were thrown into a state of panic when a number of bandits, after killing a clerk, and robbing a nearby office, engaged in a running gun battle with the police. The battle took place as the contestants were racing through two department stores. The bandits jumped into a taxi. They shot the driver when he failed to move fast enough. One bandit was trapped in a shop. A second bandit was wounded by a traffic policeman, and he fell, but he killed the policeman as the latter approached him.
