ANGLO-U.S.A. RELATIONS POLICY DECLARED A FAILURE [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] LONDON, January 15. The Tokio correspondent of “The Times,” discussing Prince Konoye's review of Japan’s relations with England and America, says the Government’s decision to hold .private separate conferences with influential groups reveals its anxieties, one of which is induced by the public’s consciousness that relations with the United States have drifted into a dangerous position. When the influential journal, the “Oriental Economist,” declares that Mr. Matsuoka’s policy, towards Britain and America is a failure, it is evident that the uneasiness cannot be ignored. These conferences are aimed at preventing the uneasiness bursting out in the Diet. The Tokio radio has discontinued all English broadcasts. Restaurants, bars, and cafes throughout Japan bearing English names will have them changed shortly.

Japan’s first manoeuvres against espionage have started in western Japan. For three days they have been concentrated in the Osaka and Kobe industrial districts.

ARMY CONFERENCE. ® TOKIO, January 15. The newspaper “Nichi Nichi” said the Minister for War (LieutenantGeneral Tojo) invited 13 senior military leaders to a conference to explain the seriousness of the domestic and foreign situation and to request full support. “Nichi Nichi” said the conference was significant because it was unprecedented in army annals. FRIENDSHIP WITH GERMANY TOKIO, January 15. The Foreign Minister, Mr. Matsuoka, in a speech at the send-off to Ambassador Hiroshi Oshima,. who is shortly going to Berlin, stressed that he had the expectation of a further strengthening of German-Japanese relations. He said: “Since the practical application of the Three-Power Alliance has still yet to be made in the future, we expect much of Ambassador Oshima’s competent activities. When we consider the future of the two nations in Europe and Asia, Ambassador Oshima’s responsibility js by no means light.” He said in conclusion, that the Three-Power Alliance was not accidental.
