Mr. Walter Russell, greenkeeper of the Dunedin Bowling Club, has received a letter from the registrar of Tattersails, notifying him that he has won the first prize of £12,000. in a recent consultation.. Mr. Russell, who is 64 years of age, does not expect to obtain his money until early in the New Year, but already he has made tentative plans, the most important being a decision to invest the greater portion of his winnings in something that will return him a steady income. When interviewed he was inclined to treat the notification from Australia with reserve, remarking that he had once drawn a z horse in “Tatts,” but had received only £2O, so that he wanted to see his money before allowing himself the pleasure of making too many arrangements for its disposal. He has been taking tickets 1 in Tattersails and art unions ever since he was a youth, and previously has won only £2O.
