NGAHERE DREDGE DISPUTE

TRIBUNAL RESERVES DECISION Proceedings before the tribunal, appointed to judge the dispute between the Westland Dredge Workers’ Union and Ngahere Gold-dredging, Ltd., as to whether the 30 men concerned were within their rights in observing a holiday on the King’s Birthday, and whether the employers were justified in dismissing the men for failing to work on that day, were concluded last evening at Greymouth. The employees were represented by Mr. D. Faris (secretary of the union), and Mr. J. W. Hannan represented the employers. Five witnesses were called for the men, four were called for the employers. The tribunal which comprised Messrs J. A. Gilmour (Industrial Magistrate), T. O. Bishop (secretary of the Coal-mine Owners’ Federation), and A. JVlcLagan (secretary of the United Mine Workers) reserved its decision.
