NOTES ON THE RACING. A FAST RUN RACE. [special to “star.”] CHRISTCHURCH, December 7. The Burnham Handicap was run at a fast pace, and the speed accounted for the unsteadiness of gait shown by the majority when under pressure. To record 3.21 from a 3.38 mark, Milestone gave a fine display of trotting, and possibly the patience of his driver, M. Holmes, was a main contribution to his victory. Elite Rey, Fire King and judgment all broke up at the start, and Royal Parrisji, beginning smartly, led the field for two fuyiongs, at which stage

a bad break lost him his position. This le'ft’-fiamel Bey in command from Milestone, Royal Parrish, Manian, George Arliss, Kilmorick, and Syntax, the field being well spread out. Hamel Bey carried on into the back stretch and past the half-mile post, and following him closely was Milestone, who was several lengths ahead of Royal Parrish, while Manian broke up and dropped put of the' race. At this stage, Elife Rey had'picked up a lot of ground, and was trotting solidly. A furlong and a half from home, Hamel Bey, feeling the effects of the pace, broke up,' and left Milestone to take over and win with' something in hand, while Royal Parfish, tiring, and Ggorge Arliss, breaking, were passed by'Elite Rey.; Royal Parrish struggled home in third place, ahead of Hamel Bey,George Arliss and £?egqsus Bay. FaVourite Beaten:

Warm favourites in Single Star and the bracketed pair, Colossal and Distributor, gave their supporters a poor run in the Harewood Handicap. The winner, Blue Diamond, showed rare gameness in a hard race and fairly outstayed the remainder. Royal Thread and Blue Diamond were the quickest to begin, and at the end of "two furlongs were closely followed by Super Jack, Ben Wyvis, Little Derby, who had begun smartly, Gentleman Jim, Brigadier, and Distributor. In a close running field, Blue Diamond and Super Jack had a narrow advantage from Royal Thread, Ben Wyvis, Little Derby, Kewpie’s Jewel, and Distributor as they passed the half-mile post. Little Derby had made up ground before the straight was reached, and passing Super Jack, she issued a strong challenge to Blue Diamond. In a fighting finish, Blue Diamond held on gamely to beat Little Derby by half a length, while Super Jack was in third place, ahead of Purveyor, Sister Polly, Bronze Eagle and Colossal.

Happy Man was nevei’ dangerous, and Single Star, commencing slowly, was always in the ruck. 1

Exciting Finish: The Wigram Handicap produced one of the most exciting finishes seen on the course for many a day, and while Huguenot had a margin of three-quarters of a length in his favour as the post was reached, the next six horses finished almost in line. Possibly Huguenot was lucky in receiving at the finish a run on the rails, and she had the run of the race throughout. Colonel Axworthy was actually the quickest to begin, and was closely followed by Mazaire, Jovial, Wainoni Girl and Huguenot, but after half a mile had been covered, Mazaire and Huguenot were the leaders, followed by Black Surprise, Salalon and Coquette. Salalon then took the lead from Huguenot, Black Surprise, Mazaire, Lady Vasclyne, Coquette and Colonel Axworthy. The field raced in this order until the straight, at which stage Salalon was in command from Huguenot, Trireme, and Black Surprise. At the .distance post real racing commenced, and while Huguenot and Salalon were fighting out the finish, Trireme, Black Surprise, Coquette, Colonel Axworthy, Jovial, Axspear and King’s Jubilee joined issue. Only the judge was in a position to say that Huguenot, on the rails, had won by half a length, while almost in line were Salalon, Black Surprise, Mazaire, Colonel Axworthy,. Jovial, Coquette, Axspear, and King's Jubilee. Popular Win: Loyal Rey, who had acted as run-ner-up in the two principal events at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting, scored a popular win in the Achilles Handicap, a fter being nicely placed throughout. Over the concluding stages, Loyal Rey stayed on too well for the remainder. Kilrea went off in front, but rather Unsteadily, and at the end of a furlong she' went to a break, leaving Ned Worthy out in front from Frisco Boy, Zincaii, Southern Smile, with a four lengths break to Harold Guy, Bill 8., Loyal Rey and Roan Duke. The field closed up, but the order was practically the same as the field commenced the last round, at which stage Ned Worthy was pulling hard, in front of Frisco Boy, Southern Smile, Loyal Rey and Zincali, and to the half-mile post and into the straight the order was the same. In the run home Ned Worthy was the leader, but a furlong from home he was tackled by Loyal Rey. He quickly faded, and Bill B. and Zincali put in great work. Loyal Rey was hurried along to win by two lengths, while a good tussle for second place went to Zincali by a head from Bill 8., who had put in a fine race. Ned Worthy was fourth, followed by Southern Smile and Roan Duke. Good Performance:

Gold Bar registered a fine performance to win the Blenheim Handicap, and his time of 4.22 for two miles was one of the best ever registered on the fast New Brighton track. He was in front early, and the speed he set over the last part was responsible for several horses breaking up. Silver Laddie went away smartly, and showed the way to Gold Bar, Clockwork, Warning, and Storm Signal, but very soon Gold Bar raced f to the front, and at the end of a mile he was still in command from ■ Silver Laddie, Rerekohua, Clockwork, Jacose, Warning, Gold Pot, Storm Signal and Toceetie. Th,e leader at the half mile post was Gold Bar, while Toceetie had run into second place, ahead of Silver Laddie, Jacose, Clockwork, Warning, Macgregor, and Storm Signal. In the straight, Gold Bar was the leader from Silver Laddie, but the latter, under pressure, broke, and left Gold Bar to win very easily from Clockwork, who defeated the breaking Silver Laddie by a narrow margin. Then there was a good margin to Toceetie, who narrowly defeated Macgregor and Warning.

Unhoppled Trotters: Reception won the Spitfire Handicap in the good time of 3.21 3-5 from a 3.29 mark. Nicely handled by J. B. Pringle, Reception was. always in a good position, but she may have been lucky in that Gyrate did not find the opening his driver, D. C. Watts, was looking for in the straight. Header and Amonos were quickest to begin, but Amonos broke early, and Header led at the end of half a mile with Reception, Native Huon, Gyrate, Manna’s Son, Guy Hugo and Bush Laddie all handily placed. Going into the back stretch. Header mixed his gait, and Reception was left in front from Gyrate, Native Huon, Manna’s Son, Guy Hugo, Bush Laddie, and Franz Derby. As the field rounded the top turn, Reception was in charge from Gyrate, Native Huon, and Manna’s Son, but as the straight was reached, Reception led from Native Huon, Gyrate and Manna’s Son. Gyrate was tucked in on the rails, and could never get into position to challenge the leader. Reception won well from Native Huon, while Manna’s Son was in

third place, ahead of Gyrate, Franz Derby and Dark Hazard. Return to Form: < Bill 8., an American bred stallion, atoned for many disappointments when he won the Hurricane Handicap in the fast time of 2.40 3-5. He came with a very fast run at the finish and won decisively. Adversity shot out quickly from Great Don and Mendel, and with half a mile covered, Adversity led Mendel, Great Pon, Harold Guy, Roan Duke, Sandusky and Worthy Need. In the back stretch Adversity still led Loyal Pat, Mendel, Roan Duke and Great Don. Into the straight led "Adversity, while handily placed were'Great Don, Roan Duke and Worthy Need. Adversity held on till the' •'ftmlp.ng post was reached, with his nearest opponents still Great Don, Roan'Drilje and Worthy Need. When Ady.ejs'ity had had enough, Worthy Need took the lead and was immediately'joined by Bill B. and Willowbank, with Zincali going fast. Bill B. finished straight and true .to win from Worthy Need with Zincali, Willowbank, Roan Duke, Wee Rotts and Adversity all close up. Bill B. showed rare determination in his finishing effort, and it was a welcome return to form by the American stallion. Zincali did not have the best of the luck in the running, but he finished at a great rate. Adversity and Great Don found the pace too warm and the journey just beyond them. IVlile in Saddle:

A small field of nine horses contested the mile saddle race, the Ajax Handicap, which was won by King’s Jubilee, in the fast time of 2.10 4-5 from a 2.16 mark. Gay Avon was actually the quickest to begin, but at the end of two furlongs Toceetie raced to the lead and set a warm pace from Gay Avon, Trireme, Repeal, Salalon, Aircraft and King’s Jubilee, and in this order the field raced round the top turn turn and into the straight with Toceetie, Trireme, Gay Avon, and Repeal all in front of King’s Jubilee. From then on King’s Jubilee put in telling work, and as''the post was reached he had the race well in hand to beat Trireme, Salalon, Gay Avon, Repeal, and Toceetie, who finished in that order. WAIKATO TROTS. OUR JEWEL WINS. AUCKLAND, December 7. For the Summer meeting of the Waikato Trotting Club the weather was fine and the track in excellent order.
