NORTHAMPTON BY-ELECTION [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] LONDON, December 7. The Northampton by-election resulted in the election of the Conservative candidate, Mr. G. S. Summers, with 16,587 votes. The Christian .Pacifist candidate, Mr. W. S.. Seamark, received only 1167 votes. Mr. Seamark is the tenth “stop the war” candidate to forfeit his deposit since the outbreak of war. REAL AUSTRALIAN 1 SYDNEY, December 7. An Australian war correspondent reports from Gaza that a full-blooded Australian Aborigine, Wally Thomson, has aroused great curiosity amongst the Arbas on the arrival, of the Australian troops at Gaza. His, eloquent outbursts of language, while he was dispersing a peering crowd, left no doubt concerning his Australian origin. He is now treated with even greater respect and veneration than his white comrades in arms.
SAVED BY LIFEBOATS LONDON, December, 6. In 15 months of war British lifeboats have rescued 2,754 persons, a greater total than during the whole previous six years of peace. After three days’ silence, the German long-range guns on the mistveiled French coast were active in a brief but fairly-intensive bombardment of the Dover area. TRADE AGREEMENTS. LONDON, December 7. It is reported that an expansion of trade between England and Turkey and the Empire and Turkey is expected to result from the financial agreement. Turkey is seeking Empire cotton, jute, steel, and wool. Anglo-Turkish contracts willl shortly be signed, including one for 22 locomotives and 650 waggons. It has been agreed that where two markets are available preference shall go to the Empire.
