The Governor-General and Lady Galway, attended by Captain Lord Dormer, A.D.C., left Well&gfoh ’by car this morning, to pay farewell visits to Hastings, Napier and Gisborne. Subsequently, Their Excellencies ■go into residence at Government House, Auckland.—Press Assn.

Dr. D. M. Logan, of Greymouth, has been promoted to the rank of Captain (temporary), Southern Military District (unattached).

Rev. Father R. J. Selleck, C.SS.R., and Rev. Father G. V. Gartlan, C.SS.R., were passengers by to-day’s express, en route to Wellington.

Miss M. T. Jackson, of Greymouth, has been appointed as typiste at the Army Office, Greymouth, and commenced duties to-day.

The engagement is announced of Robert George, younger son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Hamilton, Greymouth, to Isabel Miriam, younger daughter of Mrs. ■W. Bernhard, Ruatapu and the late D. Larsen, Wellington.

The death has occurred at Christchurch of Mr. Richard Frederick Wallis, aged 80, one of the best-known men in the wool and frozen meat trade in southern New Zealand. He is survived by his widow, five daughters, and three sons.

The funeral of Mr. William Alfred Wallwork took place at Karoro Cemetery, yesterday afternoon. The services at St. Paul’s Methodist Church, and the graveside, were conducted by Rev. A, A. Bensley. The Municipal Band, of which deceased was an exmember, paraded for the funeral.

Mr. and Mrs. J. Martin Bunt announce the engagement of their only daughter, Beatrice Dorothy, of the nursing staff of the New Plymouth Public Hospital, to Richard Akitio, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Armstrong, Wairoa, Hawke’s Bay. Mr. Richard Armstrong is a pilot instructor on the star? of the New Plymouth Air Force. It is understood that the marriage will take place at an early date.

A presentation to the former Leader fcf the Opposition, Mr. Hamilton, was made when certain member's of the Opposition met him at a supper party in Wellington. Mr. Hamilton was presented with a piece of silver in recognition of his distinguished service to the country and the National Party. The speakers included Mr. Burnett, M.P. for Temuka, and Mr. Forbes, M.P. for Hurunui. In reply, Mr. Hamilton thanked those present for their loyalty and support.

The death occurred on Saturday evening at Greymouth of Mr. David Larkin, of Rotomanu, aged 87 years. Born in County Kerry, he arrived in New Zealand 59 years ago, and for the past 45 years had been farming in the Rotomanu district. His wife died six years ago, but he is survived by three sons (David, of Blenheim, William, of Rotomanu, and Michael, of Poerua), and four daughters (Mesdames D. Myers, of Hawera, J. Clancy of Gladstone Siding, W. Meates of Greymouth, and J. Feary, of Ruatapu. The funeral will leave St. Patrick’s Church to-morrow morning, after Requiem Mass at 10 o’clock.

The death occurred at the Grey Hospital, yesterday, of Mr. Thomas James Wilton, formerly police constable at Kumara, aged 72 years. He was born at Liverpool, and came to New Zealand when he was 19 years of. age. He joined the Police Force 43 years ago, and was stationed at Wellington, Pahiatua, Taihape, Port Ahuriri, and Waipawa, before going to Kumara, where he retired from the Force in 1933, continuing to reside in Kumara. He was a Justice of the Peace, a member of the Kumara Masonic Lodge, and a past grand steward of the New Zealand Grand Lodge. He also took a keen interest in music and was a member of various musical societies. Mr. Wilton is survived by his widow, one son (Sergeant G. Wilton, Papakura Military Camp), and one daughter (Mrs. R. West, Kumara). The funeral took place this afternoon, the services at Sampson’s Chapel and the Karoro Cemetery being conducted by Rev. F. H. Robertson.
