ST. BEDE’S COLLEGE

BISHOP BRODIE’S ADDRESS [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] 1 CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 6. “Never has’ a bishop spoken to his people at a more anxious time —-for this young country, for the Empire, and for the whole world. We have seen poor France subside at this critical time and leave one country fight alone for right. And all because of lack of moral fibre in the laity of the nation.” In these words Bishop Brodie addressed an urgent appeal to the Catholic parents of Christchurch to realise the need for advanced education for their boys, at the annual prize-giving ceremony at St. Bede’s College this evening. “What we want are good Catholic laymen to lead our country and lead the nation,” Bishop Brodie continued. “Parents should realise that in depriving their boys of a good Catholic education they may be denying them the opportunity to become leaders of the community,” he added. The Bishop congratulated the college staff on the good work being done and thanked all helpers for their interest. '“The good gathering here signifies that St. Bede’s is growing gradually but surely in the appreciation of our people,” he said. Never before had there been such dangers to faith and morals, and it therefore behoved all Catholic parents to send their boys to the college said the rector (the Very Rev. Father M. J. Dowling), in his report. “It is an alarming indication of the apathy of many Catholic parents to the need for a Catholic secondary education for boys, and we solicit your efforts to rectify this state of affairs,” Father Dowling continued when mentioning that the day-boy roll remained at about 100. The college was able to give a very thorough religious, intellectual and physical education, he said. The roll of 110 boarders' was very satisfactory and the achievements of these boys in response to the more complete supervision available to boarders showed the value of the work of the college. Congratulations were extended to all old boys serving in the armed /forces.
