December 26—Waipukurau. December 26, 28— Manawatu. December 26, 28—Dunedin. December 26, 28—Taranaki. December 26, 30, January 1, 2— Auckland. December 28—Westland.

First Outing: Gold Rod’s half-brother by Tiderace, named Aqueduct, will have his first racing in the juvenile events at Woodville. He has been retained by his breeder, Mr. T. H. Lowry.

Otago Winners: The leading sires at the five race meetings held in the Otago and Southland districts for the first four months of the present season are: Balboa £920, Paper Money £570, Iliad £565, Irish Lancer £565, Night Raid £395, Croupier £340, Myosotis £3OO, and Valkryian £3OO. Good Hurdler: On his performance in the Kimberley Hurdles at Levin Segra will soon be competing for the best stakes for hurdle horses. He quite outclassed his field and secured his second success in two starts this season. He is a brother to Locknit and half-brother to M’Heath, who did well as a jumper. Wellington Cup: Being endowed with a stake of £3,100, the Wellington Cup is now the richest stake in the Dominion. The conditions attached to the race provide that only horses which, at the time of entry (January 3), have won a race of the value of £350 to the winner, or races to a collective value of £5OO, are eligible. English Stallion:

Tweed 11., the latest English thoroughbred to be imported to the Dominion, reached Auckland last week on consignment to Mr. W. C. S. Hosking, of Waiuku, who has big interests in both racing and trotting, and is a member of the New Zealand Trotting Association. Tweed 11. is by the French sire • Hotweed, winner of over 2,600,000 francs, and halfbrother to Foxglove 11., the Ascot Gold Vase winner.

Strong Team: T. R. George will have a wonderfully strong team of two-year-olds for the Auckland meeting. The four juveniles booked for the trip are Pay Roll,. Par Avion, Corn Prince, and Erinscourt. Pay Roll, Corn Prince, and Erinscourt have not only taken no harm from fheir recent exertions, but they looked brighter than ever on the tracks this week. Par Avion had a lapse while at Christchurch, but he is now picking up again after physicking.

Sleeveless Colours: The colours that have become so familiar during the last twelve months through the deeds of Sleeveless, Nigger Boy, and one or two others are scheduled to be borne by a two-year-old at the Woodville Meeting next Saturday and Monday. Messrs B. and S. Nausbaum are the owners of Master Jewel, a brown half-brother by Ringmaster to the V.R.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Sir John, and also to the useful Farmer and Coronation. The colt was bought by Mr. B. Nausbaum at the yearling sales for 210 guineas. Twice Successful:

Cheval de Volee has been the winner of the Auckland Cup in the last two seasons under 7.0 and 7.9 respectively, though last year he defeated Royevrus and Sly Fox by narrow marrow margins and for this year’s Cup he has been given only 7.8. At the Avondale meeting early this month Cheval de Volee failed by a head when weighted at 7.13 to catch British Talent (7.1) in the King George Handicap, run over one mile and three furlongs. He is reported to be in excellent shape for his third attempt. Trentham Successes: Trentham has never had a very numerous representation at Ellerslie, but it has enjoyed its full measure of success there. Auckland Cup winners, alone in the last dozen years have been Concentrate and Cuddle (twice), and Red Sun was a Trentham winner of the A.R.C. Handicap. There has been no Trentham success yet in the Railway Handicap, which has rarely been the aim of any visitor from these parts, but the Great Northern Foal Stakes has been won by Staghunter, the Great Northern Derby by Essex and Beau Vite, the King’s Plate by Synagogue, Cuddle (twice), and Beaulivre, and the Clifford Plate by Cuddle (twice) and Beau Vite.

UNFAVOURABLE PUBLICITY FOR AUSTRALIAN BOOKMAKERS SYDNEY, December 4. The “Sun” turf writer takes New Zealand newspapers to task over incidents prior to the Melbourne Cup, involving El Golea and Beau Vite and says: “These have been featured in New Zealand from an unfortunate angle, the inference being that the incidents were inspired by bookmakers. The “Sun” adds: While all wholesome racing people deplored the Beau Vite affair, it was quite unfair to blame bookmakers in the absence of absolute proof. The Bookmakers’ Association in Melbourne was quick to offer a reward for the clearing up of the El Golea attack. Moreover, the New Zealand owners are not entirely satisfied with the betting conditions in the Dominion itself. They lost no opportunity of tackling the best in Australia in the hardest of all races.”

ENGLISH BLOODSTOCK SALE [by cable— press assn.—copyright.]. LONDON, December 3. The most important bloodstock sale for many years was held to-day, when over eighty horses, owned by the late Sir Abe Bailey, were under the hammer at Newmarket. The “Daily Telegraph” says: “Such.a sale in normal times would have realised £lOO,OOO. To-day’s total was £45,000 sterling. The prices. ranged from 5200 guineas to seven guineas. .The last-named price was for a fourteen - year-old mare.” Lord Glanely paid 5200gns. for the stallion Tiberius, winner of the Ascot Gold Cup, the St. Leger and many other races. The Epsom trainer, Frank Smyth, paid 2500gns. for the seven-year-old-mare Lovely Rosa, in foal to Blue Peter. The highest price for a two-year-old was 5000gns. for Sunlore. Bailey’s horse, Son-in-Law was not offered.

Trotting MEETINgICtO COME. December 7—Waikato. December 7—New Brighton T.C. December 21 —Reefton. December 26—Ashburton. December 26—Gore. December 26, 27—Westport. December 27, 28, 31—Auckland. December 28—Winton. Splint Trouble: Three Tens is suffering from splint trouble, and may have to be stopped in his training work. ~ Southern Smile: If Southern Smile holds the form she showed at Forbury Park she will win again soon. Sheas engaged at New Brighton. Toceetie: Toceetie, which won the Sydney Handicap at Forbury recently, looks none the worse for her hard races, and was let off with serviceable tasks at New Brighton this week. Training Again: D. A. Withers, who dropped out of the trotting business some time ago, re appeared as a trainer at Ashburton as mentor of Robinette and Great Joy. New Brighton Favourites: For the principal event at New Brighton, the Achilles Handicap, Loyal Rey and Ned Worthy are among the popular fancies, while in the Ajax Handicap most interest is being taken in King’s Jubilee, Gay Avon and Toceetie. Great Record: The Jack Potts mare Francisco is building up a great record since going to Perth, and she recently secured her sixth win in eight starts. She has been a warm favourite in most of her outings, and has won in stylish fashion on each occasion.

A Stayer: Loyal Rey is making steady headway as the result of judicious racing, and his two second placings at Forbury Park indicated that the Grattan Loyal pacer would be., picking up a stake before the season is much further advanced. A rare stayer, Loyal Rey should be a profitable proposition to follow over the holidays. Barred in Betting: Australia has unearthed a young champion in Admirer, a four-year-old colt by Robert Derby—Lulu Love, owned by Mr. R. Roach, of Melbourne. At the Ascot meeting recently Admirer scored his fourth successive win, and so highly were his chances esteemed that he was barred in the betting. He was never extended to complete a mile and a-half in 3.25 2-5. Consistent: Few horses are racing with more consistency than the black pacer Peter Smith, who was produced on three occasions at Forbury Park, and after filling third berth in both twomile events, came out in the last race of the meeting and won decisively over a mile and a-quarter. He is one of the every-day sort who do nothing wrong, and although he is working his way back to a tight mark, he should be seen to further advantage for the remainder of the season.
