SLY-GROG CHARGES
FINES TOTALLING £75. For keeping liquor for sale in the no-licence district of Oamaru, George Carey was fined £5O, arid ordered to pay costs, by Mr. H. W. Bundle, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Oamaru on Tuesday, and on a second conviction for failing to give the vendor of the liquor a statement in writing of his name and address he was fined £25, and ordered to pay costs. Mr. J. E. Farrell appeared for the defendant, who pleaded guilty to both charges. , , ' Senior-Sergeant T. I. , McGregor
said that Carey’s premises were searched on November 9, when in a room, upstairs Constable McNamara found a very cunningly-constructed recess built from the floor to the ceiling, of which the top half swung out on hinges to the roof, a hat-rack being placed over the hinges to hide the joint. Inside the recess were shelves on hinges, with wires leading from them to an adjoining room, from which the hinged portion could be pulled up; In this recess 29 full bottles of whisky and 42, half-bottles of whisky were found. i In default, defendant was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, the warrant not to issue if the fines were ’ paid forthwith.
