NOTES ON THE RACING. FAVOURITES SCORE. [SPECIAL TO “STAR.”] CHRISTCHURCH, November 30. Rue and Pleading disputed favouritism in the Apprentices’ Hack Handicap, and they were the leading pair throughout. Rue was the first to show out, but at the end of a furlong, pleading had taken charge, and he led into the straight from Rue, Rangemore, Stylist and Sweet Mystery. Pleading had to be kept up to his work to hold off Rue, but was never in actual danger and won comfortably by a length. Stylist-was a fair third, half a length in front of Lawford Lass, with Sweet Mystery next. Lawford Lass, Royal Refrain, Scarteen and Jacksonville were slow away.

Unfortunate Incident: Star Wink and Divorced had a hard tussle over the final stages of the Lagmhor Plate. The former drey; out inside the last furlong, and Divorced, who was last at one stage, challenged. Just as he ranged alongside, Divorced bore in under the whip, and in addition to checking Star Wink, lost ground himself. When straightened up again, he put in a telling run, and a half head verdict went his way. The favourite, Omapo, finished from well back, into a close third, two lengths in front of Urge, who had acted as pacemaker for most of the journey. Immediately after the race, the stipendiary steward instituted an inquiry into the interference suffered by Star Wink, and after a short hearing, the stewards decided to award the race to Star Wink, and to relegate Divorced to second money.

Trench Fight Returns: Dictate was withdrawn from the Tinwald Handicap, leaving six starters, and Wardress was supported down to a short price. She, however, did not stretch out at any stage, and was beaten into third place. The winner was Trench Fight, who was under a hold behind the pacemakers, Mungatoon and Sovereign Lady, until he was allowed his head turning for home. He then spurted through on the fence, and soon gaining the front, carried o.n for one of the easiest wins of the day. 'ln an exciting tussle for second money, Roy Bun wore down Wardress in the last stride with Sovereign Lady half a head away. Mungatoon and Knight Commander'were tailed off. Overdue Success: Blue Abbey made amends for many past failures by an attractive win in the High weight Hack Handicap. He went to the front about 100

' yards from home, and although i Lockheed hung on to him, he gained a neck verdict. Gay Parade,, who disputed the lead for ’most of the way with Lockheed, was a close third, half a length in front of a bunch containing Prince Ruenalf, Princess Minerva and Foxette. Impressive Work: Schoolgirl picked, up some more easy money by whining the five horse Wakanui Handicap. Site allowed Skyrena and Symbol to make the pace to. the straight, where she gradually moved up, and had the race won a long way from the post. Symbol hung on for a good second, beating Silver Streak, who had every chance, but did not complete his task as solidly as usual. Great Flight, who was slow away, was two lengths back, with Skyrena beaten off. Outstanding Performance: ‘ . One of the most creditable efforts seen at Ashburton for a long time was credited to King’s Toast, winner of the Winchmore Hack Handicap. He got squeezed back when the tapes went up, and was in last place for over half the journey. Star Wink shot out a furlong from home, and looked to be going on for a comfortable win, but King’s Toast, who had been ridden on the fence from the start, was taken to .the outside, and after a remarkable display he got up in the last two strides to beat Star Wink by a neck. Grey Night, always handy, was a close third, a neck in front of Raceaway, who was the leader from the early stages until well into the straight. Queen Beth and Great Night were next. Trotting Events: The Melrose Handicap was won well by Indian Clipper, who took charge "five furlongs from home, and had no difficulty in. warding off a challenge by Swagger Jack. Nationalist came with a late run to take third money from Crackajack. Several of the field broke up early, and many did not take any serious part in the race. After Baytax had piloted the field in the Mayfield Handicap for a mile, Marfax drew to the front, and led into the straight from Latest Edition, Swift Lady and_ Star Ace, and they passed the post in that order.
