PATRIOTIC SOCIETY
WOMEN’S BRANCH MEETING. A meeting of the Grey Patriotic Society was held on Friday at the depot. Present: Mesdames Kitchingham (chair), Blair, McKane, Saunders, Parfitt, McLean, McKay, Curtis, Neville, Shallcrass, Miss J. Hambleton. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Warnes, Smith and Miss Heaphy. Accounts amounting to £3/6/6 were passed. During the month, farewells were tendered to Sisters Taafe and HayMcKenzie, who were leaving for duty overseas. Gift parcels were given to the following:—Air Force men leaving for training prior to going overseas, Messrs Crankshaw, Kellegher, Willianis and Win. It was pointed out how difficult it is to contact with men leaving for the Air Force, and the Committee asks the public to help in this direction by notifying the names of those leaving the district for duty with the Air Force overseas. _ \ It was decided to hold a social afternoon (bridge, mah-jong or any game guests would like to play) in Harker’s tea-room next Monday, December 9. This function is open to everyone, providing the committee have the names early so as to arrange for tables, etc. The Committee are providing afternoon tea, and the proceeds are to be given to the Appeal Fund. On Friday there were eight cases of knitting sent forward. They contained 155 pairs mittens, 108 balaclavas, 143 scarves, 40 hussifs, and 27 pairs of gloves. For the Navy and mine-sweepers the following were sent: 12 long-sleeve polo-necked pullovers, 4 ordinary ones, 3 sleeveless ones, 5 pairs sea-boot stockings, 5 balaclavas, 33 pairs mittens, 12 scarves. The Committee thank those who helped to knit these articles. Help is still asked for with knitting, and wool may be had at the depot every Tuesday and Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. A vote of thanks was passed to the Press for courtesies extended and to all citizens who have helped the Committee.
