ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETIES

S.I. COUNCIL MEETING. The Council of the South Island Acclimatisation Societies held its annual meeting in Christchurch. Delegates came from the other societies and re-elected their chairman, Mr. G. L. Pomfret-Dodd, who is secretary of the North Canterbury Society. Of the 15 remits brought forward, the following were passed:—“That the Minister for Internal Affairs be asked to reconsider his decision to apply a closed- season for game in 1941, so far as the South Island is concerned.” “That the Minister for Marine be requested to increase the amount of opossum revenue appropriated to acclimatisation societies in order to cover the cost of the expenses involved in ranging and generally administering the regulations.” “That the Minister for Marine be requested to acquaint acclimatisation societies with the annual cost of the fresh-water fish research, and the extent to which such cost is met by the licence percentage contribution made by acclimatisation societies.” _ “That all property occupiers desiring to shoot on their own properties be required to obtain shooting licences, which will "be supplied by the society.” _ “That rangers be empowered with right of search of motor-cars,” and “that adequate petrol allotment for ranging be advocated.” “That a uniform price be fixed for the purchase of shags’ heads, nestlings and eggs, by all South Island societies.” “That it shall be unlawful for any person, whether the owner or occupier of any land or not, to place in oi’ near the margin of any water (including any river, stream,' lake, lagoon, pond, or swamp) any kind of grain or seed for the purpose of attracting or feeding any native and/or imported waterfowl to any such water, unless such areas have been gazetted as sanctuaries, or gazetted as closed against shooting from year to year.” In the case of this last remit, the suggestion that the societies frame their own regulations was adopted.
