t BRITAIN’S SAVINGS. ' [BRITISH OFFICIAL WIRELESS.] RUGBY, November 28. The striking achievement of the National Savings Committee and of small savers, to whom it appealed, in raising more than- £475 millions sterling during the first year of operations, excites-Press comment. “Sir Robert Kindersley, the chairman,” says the “Daily Telegraph,” “has done a great national service in organising this substantial contribution to a bridging of the gap between war expenditure and national revenue. Saving money this time is much more than setting something aside for a rainy day. In so far as the country’s financial situation is { eased, the danger of inflation avoided, and rising prices prevented, the saver is safeguarding his own pocket as well as aiding the war effort.”
COAL MINERS UNEMPLOYED. LONDON, November 28. A Joint Committee of all branches of the Labour and Trade Union Movement is being established to examine the situation in the British coal mining industry, where unemployment in some districts and congestion in others is producing a difficult situation. The T.U.C. to-day considered the problems of many railway sidings that are overflowing with wagons laden with coal while the public are unable to obtain their requirements.
