ANGLO-U.S.A. CO-OPERATION
BASES IN DOMINIONS. [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT,.] NEW YORK,. September 19. The Washington correspondent of the “New York Times” says that British Empire and the United States representatives are conferring on the possibility of closer co-operation among English-speaking peoples throughout the world, particularly in the joint use of naval and air bases for mutual defence. The British Ambassador (Lord Lothian), the United States Secretary of State (Mr. Cordell Hull), and the Australian Minister (Mr. R. G. Casey) are participating in conversations, chiefly about the use of Australian, New Zealand and South African bases by the United States. The United States, it is stated, has adopted a policy of keeping enemies far from its coasts. Thus bases in Australia, South Africa, and at Singapore, would obviously be most valuable.
SALE OF FREIGHTERS. WASHINGTON, .September 19. Two columnists, Messrs Pearson and Allen say that President Roosevelt is expected to approve of the sale to Britain of freighters of between eight and fen thousand tons, • which are tied up in Virginia, at a cost of 8,000,000 dollars, plus 5,000,000 for repairs.
AIR TRAINING FACILITIES. .- NEW YORK, September 19. The “Daily News” says: The Aeronautics Board announces that Mr. La Guardia is negotiating for the granting to Canada of airport facilities to train cadets in Florida when the snow prevents the use of aerodromes in Canada. I \ BRITISH-AMERICAN UNION. LONDON, September 20. Replying to a question inthe House of Commons, the Lord Priyy Seal (Mr Attlee) said that in the event of a proposal for an act of union between Great Britain and the United States, similar to that offered 'France, the House would have every opportunity to discuss the scheme.,
