'Apopintments to West ’ Coast schools were confirmed yesterday by the Canterbury Education Board, as follow: —Kumara, Miss M. P. Brown; Taylorville, Miss B. W. Roberts.
Mrs. E. Rosa Sawtell, an artist known throughout New Zealand, died at her home ,in Christchurch yesterday after a long illness. She was 68 years old. She was born in Christchurch.

Mr A. F. Wilson, Railways Department porter, Kaiata, left to-day, on transfer to Ashburton. He has been replaced by Mr H. J. Skates, Te Kinga, who was formerly on the maintenance staff.
Mrs. Naomi Roder, who, celebrated the one hundredth anniversary of her birth on April 29 last, died at her home, Lyttelton, yesterday morning. Born in Suffolk in 1840, Mrs. Roder, arrived at Lyttelton in the ship Mermaid in January, 1868.
A London cablegram announced the death of Sir Edward Denison Ross, who was born in 1871. Since 1916, he was the Director of the School of Oriental Studies, London Institution, and Professor of Persian in the University of London.
A London cablegram announced the death of Professor Charles Gabriel Seligman, M.D., F.R.C.P., F.R.S. He was Professor of Ethnology at London University, and a prominent surgeon. He took part in ethnological expeditions to Africa, Asia and Australia. He was 67 years of age.
Very Rev. Dr; A. J. Mcßae, chancellor of- the archdiocese of Wellington, has been raised to the rank of a Domestic Prelate, which carries with it the title of Rt. Rev. Monsignor. Monsignor Mcßae, after completing his studies, went to Washington for four years and then returned to St. Joseph’s Church, Buckle Street, Wellington, as curate. Later he was appointed administrator and chancellor of the archdiocese.
Mr J. Rothera, who will enter camp with the Fourth Reinforcements, was farewelled by the Greymouth St. John Ambulance Brigade, and presented with a silver cigarette case, suitably inscribed. The presentation was made by the Divisional Superintendent, Mr G. H. Griffiths, who with other speakers eulogised the work of Mr Rothera as a member of the Brigade, and wished him health and success.
