Dr. and Mrs. G. W. Meade left, last evening, on return to Timaru.
-Mr. G. Anderson arrived yesterday, from Waipukurau, on a visit to Greymouth.
Dr. H. G. Denham, chairman of the Wheat Research Institute, is in Lewisham Hospital, Christchurch.
Mrs. N. Hampton (Charleston) and Miss B. Jarra (Ashburton) are visiting’ Mrs. G. Herring, Mount Street.
Advice has been received in Auckland of the death in England of Mr W. H. Hanger, who was engineer to the Auckland Harbour Board for 24 years until his retirement in 1924..
Guests at Revingtons Hotel include: Mr C. H. Johnston, Miss E. S. Marshall, Christchurch; Miss R.‘Dayey, Ikamatua; Mr R. W. Gollon, Wellington.
Mr N. C. Manchester, of the Union Bank of Australia, Christchurch, will replace Mr W. J. Preddy on the Bank’s Greymouth staff. Mr. Preddy enters camp with the Fourth Reinforcements.
Major E. H. Whiting has been attached to Army Headquarters, Wellington, for duty as Publicity Officer, and has ceased to be seconded to the Central Military District Headquarters for similar duty.-—Press Assn.
Messrs R. Macdonald, of Waikuku, and D. R. Ogilvy, of Foxton, haVe been appointed members of the Flax Plan Industrial Committee in place of Messrs A. G. Long and B. B. Wood who have resigned.
Mr. IT. M. Israelson, of the clerical staff, Railways Goods branch, Greymouth, will leave on September 26, on transfer to Rangiora. He will be replaced at Greymouth by Mr. C. W« Bonney, Invercargill.
Advice was received at Greymouth, this morning, of the death at the Vicarage, Seatoun, Wellington, of Mrs. J. E. Warren. Deceased was a former resident of Greymouth, and mother of Mrs. J. A. Jermyn, who recently left Greymouth for Seatoun.
Mr H. C. Harley has retired from the presidency of the Automobile Association, Canterbury, after three years in office. At a meeting of the council of the association last evening tributes were paid to Mr Harley’s work. Mr Harley will be succeeded by Mr C. G. Curtis, who is presidentelect, being the only nominee.
Messrs J. Rothera and R. Straker, of the Grey Hospital staff, who will enter camp with the Fourth Reinforcements, were farewelled yesterday. Mr. Straker was presented with a Rolls razor and a money belt, and Mr. Rothera with a leather suitcase, and a silver cigarette case, both suitably inscribed. The presentations were made by Mr. J. Galbraith, who wished both guests every success, and a safe return.
The death occurred at Coronation Hospital, Christchurch, yesterday, of Miss Barbara Smith, eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. Smith, formerly of Redcliffs. The late Miss Smith, who was 35 years of age, com-' 'menced training in the Grey Hospital in 1924, and remained there until 1929. She returned to the hospital as a staff nurse in 1931 and 1932. She left Greymouth about five years ago, and for the past four years had not enjoyed good health. She is survived by one brother, Mr. C. J. Smith, of Paringa, formerly of Greymouth, and one sister, Mrs. W. Double, of Christchurch. Mr. Smith left last evening by rail-car for Christchurch.
Advice has been received by the National Patriotic Fund Board that Mr Victor C. Jones, who was general secretary of the Young Men’s Christian Association in Wellington before he left for overseas with the New Zealand forces, and who has been acting as the board’s representative-in Egypt, has been offered an appointment as staff captain with the British forces. Appreciation of Mr Jones’s service was expressed by the board at its meeting yesterday. It was decided to appoint Mr F. E. Long, another Young Men’s Christian Association secretary, to act as the board’s representative in Egypt till the board’s commissioner, Lieutenant-Colonel F. Waite, arrives there.—Press Association.
Mr. H. Rattray, who will enter camp with the Fourth Reinforcements of the Expeditionary Force, was the guest of the Greymouth branch.of the National Party at a social at' Harker’s reception rooms, last evening, there being a large attendance. A presentation of a money belt, containing notes, was made to the guest by the Branch President, Mr. P. McDonald,; who congratulated Mr. Rattray on volunteering for service in the Expeditionary Force and expressed best wishes for his speedy return to civil life. Other speakers joined in extending good wishes. Approprate toasts were honoured during the evening and items were given by Messrs J. Houston, W. S. McClymont, J. Boucher, Hall and E. McQueen. *
