GREY CLUB’S REPORT. The following report will be presented to the annual meeting of the Greymouth Tennis Club on Monday next: — The season opened on October 7, when an Yankee tournament was held. The membership was much higher than for some years, and the courts and grounds were in good order. Friendly matches were played against other clubs in the district by the A and B teams, while the president’s trophy was competed for three times by the men’s team. The first trophy match was against the Ikamatua Club, resulting in a win for Grey. The next challenge was by the Runanga Club, and they were successful in winning. Later in the season we played the United Club for the trophy, but we were again unsuccessful. In the club’s annual events the women’s championship was won by Mrs Hall, and the men’s A championship by Mr T. Young. The women’s B championship was won by Mrs Rollinson and the men’s B by J. Luey. During the season challenge buttons were introduced to be competed for by women’s doubles, men’s doubles and combined doubles, but these were not played for often on account of unfavourable weather in the latter part of the season. Several of the men from the club have joined the Forces, and the club wishes them every success and a safe return. The club was /well represented in the combined West Coast and Easter Tournament, Mrs Hall being successful in winning the women’s singles events. Mrs Provan, our top lady, was unfortunately indisposed, and was unable to play during the latter part of the season. The junior members proved to be very keen last season, so a separate junior ladder was introduced and was worked regularly. During the Winter the four courts were top dressed, a large part of the work being done by a few of the members who were shown the method of top-dressing by Mr J. R. Manhire, of Christchurch, to whom we are indebted for a very fine job. The work was well done, and the courts are now in excellent condition for the commencement of the season. The financial position of the club is good and members are assured of a further successful season. The Press is to be thanked for publicity given during the season.
