WESTLAND LAND BOARD

MR. W. CLAYTON ELECTED. A poll for the election of a member to a vacancy on the Westland Land Board, caused by the statutory retirement of Mr. J. Ryall, M.L.C., on account of his appointment to the Legislative Council, was held on Monday. This is the only seat on the Board that is elective, the others being by appointment. There were three candidates, Thomas Chesterman, of Kanieri, William Clayton, of Ahaura, and Robert McTaggart, of Runanga. Mr. Clayton was elected by a majority of 248 votes. Details of the voting were as follow: W. Clayton 388 R. McTaggart .. . . 140 T. Chesterman 119 Informal votes .. . . 27 Total votes recorded .. 624. Mr. Clayton is a former member of the Board. The number of votes cast was small, hundreds of electors not exercising their franchise. On his retirement from the Board, Mr J. Ryall was presented by members with a testimonial, expressing their appreciation of his services and co-operation, and wishing him continued health and success in his career in the Legislative Council. .
