Freight hauled through the Otira Tunnel last week from west to east amounted to 16,374 tons, compared with 10,499 tons in the corresponding week of last year, an increase of 5,875 tons. In the corresponding week of 1938, the total was 11,087 tons. Through the war-time increase in postage rates and reductions in the number of flights made, inland air mail figures—letters dispatched from the Chief Post Office, Christchurch — fell in March to the lowest figure since the inauguration of the air mail services in 1936. Figures for May. 1936, the first complete month, were 9186 letters carried. The decrease in the last six months is shown by the following figures of letters carried: — September 40,151, October 19,669, November 18.445, December 7772, January 9282, February 6890, March 6133.
