March 23 —Tuapeka. March. 23, 25 —Auckland. March 23, 25—Wairarapa. Mgirch 23, 25—Feilding. March 23, 25, 26—Riverton. March 25 —Kumara. March 25—Beaumont. March 25—Waipukurau. March 25, 26—Canterbury. March 30, April 1— Greymouth. March 30, April I—Avondale.

Arriving To-day: The Chief Ruler’ hDfbe, Lifeguard, which has been purchased by a Greymouth 'spoilsman;- will arrive by- boat from Lathis '-afternoon. He at -dpdhake on Saturday, but’was not fancied and rah accordingly. *:’■ Peacock: C. J. Walsh’s sprinter Peacock is suffering from a sprained pastern, the result ,of ■ the/hprse putting his foot in a He is having a “hnef spell, but will be ready to Easter.

Ballad: .. k . For his two runaway wins at Dunpdin during the holidays, Ballad has been, raised..24lbs —131 b for the first and illb for the second. He will, still : be ! ‘h‘'force to be reckoned with, but jie may ‘find it difficult to ‘concede practically a stone to Fundy Bay.

Royal Money: Royal Money’s performances at Gore made his Winton prospects look bright; “but the Paper* "Money three-year-old appears to have trained off, as he was not a danger on either day at Winton. Yearling Entry:

Six hundred and' ten yearlings are catalogued., for tlje sale§ at, Rand.wick at Easter/ One breeder, Mr R Miller (Kia dfaP i as.s v 'entere¥'loa' lots, and Mr H. Thompson (Tafwyn)’66.

• V Mona’s Spng: Mona’s Song, who scored a brilliant win in the Southland Handicap last month, ran poorly in the Winton GuP/ and her second day engagement was cancelled before weights were declared. Unless track -conditions are different, the Invercargill mare cannot be fancied for the Dunedin Cup. r

Prolonged Spell: The three-year-old Trench Coat (Pink Coat—Mataa) . has suffered from recurring soreness and has been turned out indefinitely. The gelding showed considerable promise, and it is a pity that he is not sound. A number of the Pink Coats have been similarly troubled, as was the stallion, himself, and in "addition Trench Coat’s dam, Mataa, was not a sound mare. A Land Deal:

It is reported, that the Randwick trainer, J. T. Jamieson, has purchased a block of 250 acres w kura from the estate of Edward Allen, and will take over in April. Meanwhile, the property will be surveyed and a house erected. It will be occupied by a son of. .the ,purchaser, although Jamieson himself- intends to spend a good deal of time there. He will probably. keep his brood mares there and also use it to spell horses when they require a rest after racing in Australia.

Cash Transaction: The A.J.C. has put its foot down on the “pay-if-I-come” system. A regulation issued by the committee provides that an entry fee must be charged for?' every horse entered in a race or aJ charge made for scratching a horse from such race. It has been the custom of. some provincial clubs in New South Wales to accept free entries, and trainers, after the weights, have been permitted to scratch their horses by. a certain hour without' payment of any kind.

A Walk-Over: A walk-over is so unusual nowadays that probably many people have never heard of the rules covering such an occurrence. Where only one horse is weighed out for a race, only one-half of the amount provided for the winner has to be paid. Where only one horse is weighed out for a fiat race it must “walk over,” ile., cover the course, unless exempted by the stewards; but in a hurdle, race or steeplechase it need 1 only go to the starting point to be deemed to have walked over.

King- Rey: King Rey, who spreadeagled ..the field at 'Te Rapa in the Storey Memorial, a race he . won two years ago, is 10 years and last season when he joined the ranks of hurdlers it was supposed that he had nearly finished with flat racing. There is scarcely an important event on Auckland provincial courses that King Rey has not won during his seven seasons racing, and over the sticks he has. accounted for the Trentham Hurdles, and Sydenham Hurdles; In stakes -he has accumulated approximately £7OOO.

Dunedin Cup Candidate: Peony Rose was the only Dunediiy Cup candidate seen in action at Winton, and, though beaten, she ran a good race. Under 8.13 she was kept doing her best over the first ffialf-mile by the lightly-weighted Waitoru, and when he was finished with, Valantua and Chirp, each in receipt of 161 b, took her on. Peony Rose stuck to her task well after so much use had been made of her, and was only beaten a short length by Valantua. This Robespierre mare has had three hard races, one at Gore, and two at Winton, to help her preparation for the Dunedin Cup, and should strip fit to-morrow. Under 7.6 Peony Rose is likely to set a‘ solid pace, and if she can see out a mile and a-half she should beat more than beat her.

Successful Filly: A feature of the racing at Winton ■was the decisive win of Blissful Lady over,.a mile, this /being her. fourth sdccess this season, and her third Win 'on

end. The Paper Money filly has always shown herself to be a useful galloper, and! last season finished,, second to Gold Salute in a two-year-old. race at Wingatui. She has not been hurried' this term, but the manner in which she outclassed the hack milers suggests that she will not be troubled to win over further ground. She is not a big filly, but is solidly made, and can handle both good-and bad conditions. Although she is.,not/engaged at/Wingatui .there'will be good opportunities to place her to advantage during the next few weeks, and a race such' as the Southern Champion Hack. Handicap at Riverton at Easter, would suit her. Her dam, Lady Blissful, has produced others in Baby Bliss, Overlooked, ohnny, and Delvane. Ladj Blissful was got by Elysian from the imported mare Lady Wayward IL, by. Ladas from Vane, by Orme from Vampire, by Galopin. t

RICCARTON NOTES HORSES FOR HOKITIKA ' [special to “star.”] CHRISTCHURCH, February 20. Most of the horses engaged at the Westland"Racing Club’s ‘meeting on Saturday were seen in action to-day, butvthere was very Tittle, fast gallopingj./and mqsj.ly ‘this,;was, .confined to sprints. .».-Oiie,gallqpl over some ground wp,d. Mlddleham, .who was always going betteg„than .Knight Commander over in 1.31. kßqyaUßank,-... impreg'sed by a half mile sprint in 51. He is a half-broth-er by Roydon to Rebel Rank, and should, have an. easy,, task, in, the No-vice-'Stakes on;.Saturday. /.His stable rotate Jocaiita,"‘also in.the same race, beat Lady ? Eglantine and .Clubman over five furlongs; Grey Silk, another ..maiden candidate,;'beat Stabilize in’ a sim'ilar 'task. ’' Grey Silk is by Hoylake from Silk Stocking, and is owned by R. W. and W. A. Franks, who'/’afh-both well known jn 'the trotting wdrld.C ‘Grey Silk • will probably be-Royah Rank’s strongest’'opponent. Did !■ 'Riocarton will have a strong team at Hokitika, but some of those appearing in the list of acceptances will not be on the scene. These Include. Donafiea, Wine Card and Sir Frederic, whose owners state they did not accept, with them. Rebel Chief has got through a lot of solid work without being asked to go against the watch, and he will have to be kept in view on the West Coast circuit. His owner-trainer, F. Hall, will also be represented on the trip by Muriet and Miss Tasta. The latter should make an early return on the circuit.

Land Raid, trained by M. Conza, has had only one gallop in the last few .weeks, ...as n.Q can. be taken with him in case he breaks down. He will thus be at a disadvantage at Hokitika, but. should improve later. A. E. Ellis was engaged to ride Disdain in the Publican’s Handicap at Wingatui on Thursday, but intimated during the week that he could not get down to the weight 8.7, and P. Spratt will probably have the mount.
