TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping MEETINGS TO COME. December 9 —Hororata. December 9, 11 —Woodville District. December 16 —Waipa. December 16 —Hurunui Turf. Maxam Out; Maxam has ben scratched for the Railway Handicap at Auckland. Mounts for L. J. Ellis: L. J. Ellis will ride Disdain in the Railway Handicap and Floodtide in the Auckland Cup'. First Race: Lambourn (Bulandshar —April Fool) two-year-old half-brother to Be?iupartir, is to make his first appearance on the second day of the Woodville meeting. Improved. Mare: The Lord Warden mare, Sea Lady, has been showing improvement in her work at Invercargill. Her mile in 1.47 4-5, with the last half in 53 4-5, this week, was a good effort. No Champion: Play On had everything in his favour on Saturday last at Feilding, but 1 he stopped badly when Siegmund put

in his 'challenge. The Philamdr gelding is no ’champion, and will need careful placing. ' Brilliant Sprint: At Riccarton yesterday, on the grass, Rebellion was responsible for a brilliant display over half a mile in 47 '2-5, and Grey Silk and Lady Magellan followed in 49 4-ssec. These were the only serious gallops on this track. Kilrobe in Favour: Kilrobe is in favour for the principal event at Hororata to-morrow, and may be given that honour on the totalisatorl' The Robespierre mare seems to have settled down, and her great pace and share of stamina should win more races for her.

Mondello: ' Mondello has been working particularly well at Invercargill, and will be cherry ripe for holiday racing. One morning this week the Nigger Minran five furlongs easily in 1.3 4-5, the ■ last half in 50, and did it easily. ’ " **•»• Orelio: Orelio, the Limond —Waterwings three-year-old, who cost' a' thousand guineas as a yearling, has so, far wOn only one race—a juvenile handicap at Avondale fourteen'months ago. His 7.7 in the Railway Handicap is the result 1 of his second to Beaulivre in the Great Northern Guineas;

Ajax Back: Ajax, who has not raced since early September, has reappeared on the training track at Caulfield. It is hoped to have him tuned up for the rich Futurity ' Stakes in February. This seven furlongs event might be a great draw if Ajax, Manrico, High Caste, Reading, and Beaulivre were all to run —ahd that is a possibility. Riders for Woodville:

Riding engagements announced for the : Woodville Meeting include:—W. J. Broughton, Oragon, Lambourn, Indian Sun. Little Dorrit, Millament, Flamnitirion/ Colonel Bogey,' Beaupatir (second day); B. H. Morris 1 , Friesland, The Ring, Kotua; P. Jarvis, High Peer; G. R. Tattersail, Siegmund, Waimutu, King’s Ma.rk, Anita Foe, W. J. McDowell, ■Primak; J. Chaplin, Daregain;' S. Anderson, Thrasos.For West Coast Circuit:

There is ’every indication of an unusually large team of Riccarton horses visiting the'West Coast' over the forthcoming holiday circuit. These include Aggravate, Rebel Chief, Miss Tasta Muriet, Improvident, Roy Bun, Skyrena, Rebel Rose, Lady Magellan, Philibun, Glenogil, Garonne, Passenger,' Royal Lassie, Phil, Fascinator Box On, Lady Middleham, Merry March, Jan Kidd, Complexion, Nigella, Ngaitama, Racewell and Papernilla. His First Race:

Don Quex, last away in the maiden at Feilding on Saturday last, and finally fourth, is a half-brother to the Trentham July winner, Hunting Chorus, their dam being Seamstress, by Catmint from imported Slipstitch, the dam of Black Thread. Being by Lord Quex, there is every reason to expect Don Quex to improve with age. He carries the same colours as Tidewaiter and Classform. He was bred by Mr. G. P- Donnelly, and had not previously raced, being purchased at the 1938 sales by Mr. C. W. Boyd for 50 guineas.

Smart Colt: Tuatara did not have a big winning margin at Felding, but his was quite a good performance as the Flax-mere-bred three-year-old had to beat off a really smart galloper in Saxon Tor, whose second day t form showed up Tuatara as being extra smart. This Lord Quex gelding, who is a halfbrother to Lavina, has • raced only three times for two wins and a sixth, and it does not appear as if the best has yet been seen of him. He should pay "his way handsomely during the holidays and, at this stage, he looks cheap at the 200gns. Mr W. McA. Duncan paid for him.

Riding at Hororata; Riding engagements for the Hororata Racing Club’s meeting to-morrow Include the following:-A. E. Ellis Rebel Queen; R. Mackie. Improviripnt Rebellion; C. Wilson,. Dictate, Scar’teen, Great Legion; M, Caddy Kina’s Toast, Swingtime, Rebel Rose, Tadv Magellan, Philibun; C. Stokes Sham Raid, Sham Boy, Dividend; .1. Tpnnings, Pink Lad, Gay Hussar; R. [SPECIAL TO “STAB.”] CHRISTCHURCH, December 8. rrh« annual race meeting of the Th Racing Club will be held on ll“ r °wororata raceourse to-morrow The acceptances are probably the best

' received for some time past, and under the single pool system, all fields should provide two dividends. The track is certain to be hard, and times will be fast. The principal event will be the H. A. Knight Memorial Handi- • cap, and some smart seven furlong performers will parade. No doubt Kilrobe is entitled to be favourite, especially as she will have a 51b allow- ; ance, but several, of her opponents ' are capable of keeping her busy. The I Hororata Hack Handicap will be the distance event of the day, and although there are only seven acceptors, the issue appears open. Trotting MEETINGS 'TO COME December 9 —Waikato. December 9 —Roxburgh. December 1G —Timaru. A Southland Prospect: Icilma put up an outstanding performance to run second to Real Gold over a milo and a quarter at Wairio, and it would be difficult to name a better novice prospect for the holiday meetings than the Rey de Oro mare. Since she raced as a three-year-old last season Icilma hasi developed into a fine 1 type of mare, but in both her races on Saturday she prejudiced her chances by failing to start correctly. Claudelands Race: A good de’al of interest will centre in the Auckland Cup Trial to be decided at the Waikato meeting to-mor-row, for it will mark the 'appearance of Uenuku, who in Auckland circles is tl|e early favourite for the big two miles race. Trained by R. A. McMillan', Uenuku has a long'list of wins to his credit; and the) short limit of 12 yards in ' the Trial Handicap should show whether he is in form or not. He will meet smart pacers' in Sandusky, Our Peggy,' Kenworthy, and Bayard, but if 'aS good as he is claimed to be he should easily account for this field. '

Nelson Eddy: Nelson Eddy, now four years old, has proved himseflf one of the best young pacers raced in recent vears, and- a proved stayer, he showed at th? Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting last month that he could sprint as well as stay. His victory in the Ellesmere Handicap on the second day . of the meeting, when he did' 2.41 2-5 for a mile and a quarter, showed his brilliance, while even more impressive was his effort in the Hornby Handicap on the third day although the time was not so fast. He is an early favourite for the John Hole Memorial at Timaru next week. 1 Brilliant Pacers Retired: Until recently trained at Addington by L. O. Thomas, Bonny Azure is to be retired to the stud and is to be mated with the American-bred U Scott. Early in her career Bonny Azure proved outstanding, winning her way to the best class with a succession of brilliant wins to stamp herself as one of the best of her selx to race in the Dominion. An eight-year-old andl by Blue Mountain King from Bonny Bingen, Bonny Azure has a great deal to recommend her, and she should prove a valuable acquisition to the stud. L. O. Thomas has also decided to pension off Glemrossie, another brilliant pacer when' at his best. When he first commenced racing Qlenrbssie had a tendency to stand on thei mark, but he possessed the speed and stamina to iriake this a minor handicap in the slower classes and he quickly won his way to the best company. Glenrossie’s barrier manners improved with experience, and, although he never became genuinely solid in this respect, he proved reasonably reliable and at the peak of his form had few superiors over any distance. During the past two seasons he appeared to lose the stamina which was the feature of his early racing, and, in spite of liberal concessions in his handicap, has been unable to compete successfully against the improving division.
