DOG REGISTRATION

LICENSE PERIOD EXTENDED.

[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, December 7. The difficulty of procuring supplies of arecoline hydrobromideA .the approved remedy for the treatment of hydatid disease in dogs, has caused the Government to extend the period 7 of existing dog licenses for one month. The registration period will now expire on February .!, 1940. The Minister for Internal Affairs (Mr. Parry) explained that the . war necessitated this action.

Under the Dogs Registration Act, 1908, existing dog licenses required to be renewed on January 1, 1940; but registration could not be effected unless the Dogs ' Registration Amendment Act, 1937, was complied with, which imposed on local authorities an obligation to supply to each dog owner at the time or registration one year’s supply of arecoline hydrobromide, costing a small additional fee. The international situation had made it difficult to obtain supplies of the approved hydatid remedy. Contracts had now been let by the Government for bulk supplies, the first qf which would arrive late in December. Unforseen delays in transit might occur, in which event local authorities and dog owners would find it impossible to comply with the law.

“It is proved to be essential,?;.added Mr. Parry, “that there should be no break in the continuity of treatment of dogs for hydatids. I. appeal to all dog/ owners to co-operate with the Government in the efforts made to eradicate hydatid disease from this Dominion.”
