FORGERY CHARGE FAILS. NEW PLYMOUTH, November 6.

Wilson Reid, of Tongaporutu, a farmer, was found not guilty in the Supreme Court to-day on a charge of forging a letter and uttering it to the Conservator of Forests at Palmerston North, alleging that another Tongaporutu farmer was cutting timber illegally from a State forest.

DAMAGES FOR CHILD

WELLINGTON, November 7

Damages totalling £1,875- were awarded by a jury, in the Supreme Court, in an action taken on behalf of lan James Waterhouse, aged seven, who suffered permanent partial disability from a fracture of the left thigh, when knocked down by a mo-tor-car in Kilbirnie. Defendants admitted liability, the jury being merely asked to assess damages.

BODY - IN HARBOUR. AUCKLAND, November 7

The body of an aircraftsman stationed at the Hobsonville air base, Eric Joseph Clince, 21, of Opua, was recovered front the upper harbour. The body was discovered by a public works ganger when crossing the harbour in a dinghy. Clince had been on leave from the base since 2 p.m. on Saturday. He had been expected to report back to his unit at 4 p.m.; but when he failed to appear it caused no concern, as he was* to go> on leave again on Sunday, and it was presumed that he had missed the boat to Hobsonville.

CHILD FATALLY SHOT

TIMARU, November 6.

Denis John Cremin, aged 5J years, died in the hospital this afternoon as the result of a wound in the abdomen, due to the accidental discharge of a gun. The boy, with his parents, was visiting friends in the country, and another lad of 13 took the boy and' an elder companion to a shed to show them the rifle.

There was no bullet in the gun, but there were six cartridges in the magazine, and in the demonstration of the mechanism, the rifle accidentally discharged, An operation was performed, but it was unsuccessful.

PRISONERS. SENTENCED.

INVERCARGILL, November 7

In the. Supreme Court, this morning, Mr. Justice Ostler sentenced the following prisoners: — Charles Henry Smith, indecent assault on a woman, granted probation for two years, and ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution.

Reginald Cooper, 35, breaking and entering and theft, two years’ reformative detention.

James Myles Ford, 22, indecent assault, IS months’ reformative detention. An application for a new trial,' on the grounds that the verdict was against the weight of evidence, was dismissed.
