TO-DAY'S RACING NEWS

Galloping

MEETINGS 'TO COME

November 3, 4 —Whangarei. November 4 —Napier Park. November 4 —Stratford. November 4, G, 8, 11 —Canterbury. November’ 11 —Napier Park. November 11, 13—Avondale. November 18 —Levin. November 18 —Southland. November 18, 20 —Waikato. November 25, 27 —Auckland. November 25 —Otaki Maori.

Gustos . Among the recent winners in Tasmania is the Lord Warden gelding Castos, who has won twice this season. Returned from Sydney:

Beau Repaire and Olympus have arrived back from Sydney, and they are likely to resume racing shortly in the Dominion. Beau Repaire has been entered for the Waikato Cup. Increase in Stakes:

The Dunedin Jockey Club will give £5OOO in stakes for its Christinas meeting, the principal events carrying stakes of £650, £5OO, and £4OO. In the last two seasons the club gave £3,005 for a two-day meeting.

Encouraging Reports: , After Catalogue had won the Melbourne Cup last year he surprised most people by his playful antics. When reappearing in Melbourne on the middle day of the recent V.A.T.C. meeting at Caulfield he showed all the same surfeit of energy. He was started in the Moonga Handicap, seven furlongs, and, after racing from last to sixth (off the track), he came back to the enclosure as though he was just warming up for the race. In a letter received at Riccarton this week by Mrs. A. McDonald, from her husband, he stated that Catalogue was in better order than at the same time 12 months ago, and he would be disappointed if he did not make another bold bid for victory. Kahui Injured: The racing career of Kahui is finished. He broke away and ran into a fence, chipping a piece off his stifle. There is little chance that he will recover from the injury. Trained by L. Knapp and owned by Mr. J. Brice, of Fern Flats. Marton, Kahui was a big four-year-old chestnut gelding by Colossus from Lady Faye, and many competent judges considered him one of the best hacks trained at Awapuni for a long time. Kahui had two races last season and he won the second one. He started this season with a win over six furlongs at the Foxton meeting and, after failing on the first day of the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting, he beat all but Sternchase in the Belmont Handicap on the second day. Royevrus

Desert Fire, the dam of Royevrus, who won the Mitchelson Cup at Ellerslie recently, was once given away and sold later for the modest sum of £5. Desert Fire’s dam, Crossfire, was a fair performer when raced by the late Mr. E. Whittle in Taranaki about 12 to 15 years ago. She was by Carbine’s son, Camp Fire, sire of Depredation, Muraahi, and other good stayers, from the Sylvia Park mare Sylvan Dale. After finishing racing, Crossfire was sold to Mr. D. J. Chartpris (Waverly) who mated her with Diacquenod to whom she produced Desert Fire. Although she did little racing, Desert Fire won a race, but developed hoof trouble and was given by Mr. Charters to his nephew, Mr. H. Franks (Hamilton) who afterwards sold her for £5.

Weight-carrying Some good weight-carrying performances have been put up in connection with the Stewards’ Handicap, a fact suggesting that weight does not greatly hampered speed over a short course. Arrowsmith won with 9-13 in 1.12., Solfanello 9.3 in 1.11, Glentruin won for the second time with 9.6 in 1.12 4-5 and Cadland with 9.5 in 1.11 2-5. After winning with 8.9, Machine Gun was third the following year with 99, Panganelli 9.11 ran second to White Fang in 1.12, Autopay won with 7.2 and two years later was second with 9.2. The Hawk was third with 9.7 in 1.10 2-5 and Grand Knight 9.6 second in 1.10 2-5. The race recoid in 1.10 2-5. and a fairly good bet should show a trial threatening to break 1.10 under favourable track and atmospheric conditions in addition to getting a good passage on the journey.

Trotting MEETINGS TO COME Nov. 7,9, 10 —N.Z. Metropolitan. Nov. 23, 25—Forbury Park. Change in Betting System: The Forbury Park Club will revert to the “Forbury system” of betting at its Spring meeting this month. Nationalist:* The three-year-old Nationalist attracted favourable notice by working a mile and a-half in 3.22 at Addington on Tuesday. He was got by Grattan Loyal from Lady Helston. Fine Art: A vote taken among owners, trainers, track watchers and students of form at Addington, on the prospective winner of the New Zealand Trotting Cup would award the favouritism to Fine Art, with Gallant Knight as the second choice. Drivers:

O. E. Hooper will drive Cantata in the Cup on Tuesday, and M. Stewart, the North Island reinsman, will be behind Blair Athol. R. J. Humphreys, trainer of both these candidates, considers Blair Athol will win, and he was satisfied with her 3.12 3-5 for a mile and a-half at Addington on Thursday (according to a Christchurch writer).

King’s Play: Kink’s Play did not impress at Oamaru, and seems to have receded in favour for the Trotting Cup. Too much notice should not be taken of one failure. In August, King’s Play was rated as the best pacer in the Dominion, and he has a record of 4.15. On a dry track (says an exchange) he may still be Fine Art’s most formidable opponent, though in mud everybody would desire to back Marsceres.

Nell Volo:

At one time, Nell Volo was regarded as one of the best trotters in New Zealand, but an injury made necessary a long spell from the race track. Her last appearance at Addington suggested that she had lost all form, but it is pleasing to note that she is now displaying all her old-time dash. A feature of the Auckland Trotting Club’s Spring meeting was the return to form of Nell Volo and the highclass displays .she gave from marks that, appeared to give her little chance of even being in the money. From 156yds behind in the Mountain Handicap. Nell Volo went out smartly, and with a fast run was almost with the leaders at the six-furlong post, eventually to finish fourth in 3.24, her time from post to post being 3.21. In the Hillsboro’ Handicap, two miles, she was slow to get going from 168yds behind, taking 20see to reach the actual post. Gradually making up leeway, and trotting in perfect style. Nell Volo finished third in 4.32 1-5, her time from post to post being 4.26 1-5. The permformauces of Nell Volo after a spell of four years give the impression that .she will attain her former high standard and race prominently at Addington next week. All going well. Nell Volo may attempt to break the 2.3 2-5 mile record of Worthy Queen, at the Auckland mooting in December.
