EVACUATION IN BRITAIN
STATEMENT BY MINISTER [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYEIGHT.] LONDON, November 2. In a statement reviewing the evacuation of women and children from congested areas, the Minister for Health (Mr. Walter Elliot) said today that 1,500,000 had been moved in four days without casualities. The number included' 750,000 unaccompanied children, 542,000 mothers with children, and 12,000 expectant mothers. Half of the mothers and threequarters of the children were still in the areas to which they had been evacuated. Mr. Elliot said that fears of epidemics following the evacuation were not justified; in fact the number of infectious diseases was lower than at the corresponding period last year. The response to the appeal for assistance in maintaining these children had been satisfactory, and in the two largest areas from which children had been evacuated —London and Newcastle-on Tyne—a large number of parents were willing to make the contribution required.
