HOKITIKA, November 3.

A general meeting of the Hokitika Businessmen’s Association was held in Mclntosh’s Club Room, Mr. W. H. Stopforth presiding ovei’ a good attendance.

The anniversary day of Westland, December 1, was discussed, and it was resolved that in view of the unsuitable date, this holiday should be observed on the first Monday after the New Year, January 8. For Christmas week-end it was resolved to observe late night on Friday; close at midday on Saturday December 23 and re-open on Thursday December 28. For New Year’s weekend it was decided to observe late night on Friday, close at midday on Saturday December 30, and re-open on Wednesday January 3. It was resolved to try a screen advertising scheme for three months. A-. suggestion that shopkeepers in Hokitika should revert to the former statutory half-holiday and late night, Wednesday and Saturday respectively, was discussed. It was decided unanimously that the present Saturday halfday and Friday la-te night should remain. It was resolved that the Railways Department be requested to make a through service from Hokitika, of the late Greymputh-Christchurch train on the Friday night before Christmas Eve, the usual late train from Hokitika being delayed to 10 p.m.

The provision of a late fee posting box on the railcar was discussed and it was decided to write to the Railways Department on the matter. A resolution was passed reaffirming the Association’s approval of the improvement of the Municipal Baths as a Centennial memorial and offering their co-operation.
