N.Z. CUP DAY.

TO-MORROW’S PROGRAMME..

[special to “star.”]

CHRISTCHURCH, November 3. The Canterbury Jockey Club’s metropolitan meeting, otherwise known as- the New Zealand Cup meeting, will be opened at Riccarton to-morrow. The fields will be all up to the standard of previous years, both in regard -to duality and numbers, and horses from all parts of New Zealand will be assisting. The track will probably be firm, but a thick coating of grass will make for favourable going. Wings of Song is an unlikely starter in the Spring Plate. The win and place system will be in use. Following is a brief review of the fields: —

12.2. Spring Hurdle Race Handicap, one mile and three ; quarters. —Dividend 11.0, Dorado 10.7, Esperance Bay 9.11, * Jewish Lad 9.3, Fundy Bhy, Silver River, Full Back 9.0. Dividend, Dorado, Esperance- Bay,

Fundy Bay and Jewish Lad have the best recent form of those engaged in the hurdles. Dorado has l won. twice this season over the battens, and Dividend defeated a useful field of hacks at Rangiora.. Dorado, Dividend and Esperance Bay 'will probably carry most support. 12.37. The Spring Plate, hack conditions. One mile. —Lights Out, Spear Thrust, Sternchase 8.2, Chirp, Hinerawe, Sudan 7.11, Areas, Duncannon, Great Swoop, Moorsotis, Nigger Boy, Wings of Song 7.7, Authoress, Classform, Dinah Dhu 7.2. Wings of Song and Sternchase look the pick of the field in the Spring Plate, on their Trentham performances, but there is a doubt as to. whether Wings of Song will be started. Great Swoop, Spear Thrust, Chirp, Nigger Boy and Authoress 1 will also attract attention. In the absence of Wings of Song, Sternchase will be a ■warm favourite, with support also forthcoming for Great Swoop and Au 2 thoress. * 1.22. Linwood Handicap, seven furlongs.— Verey Lights 9.0, Combat, Phenomenal 8.13, Flame Queen 8.10, Raeburn 8.9, Half and Half 8.6, Montessa, Great Flight 8.5, Asia 8.2, Hearth 7.9, Blazealong 7.8, Lockit, Scold, Night Prince, Tint o’ Tan, Lady Drake 7.7. There is a good field of class hacks in the Linwood Handicap, and recent winning form is represented by Verey Lights, Raeburn, Montessa, Duncannon, Hearth and Asia, while Scold Phenomenal and Flame Queen have been in the places. Form suggests Verey Lights, Duncannon and Raeburn. ■

2.2. NEW a handicap of £2OOO (including Gold Cup value £75). Two miles. Royal Chief .. 0 0 iluntiiiß Cat. .. " * Arctic King .. 810 Wagner • • ‘ “ Peerless .. 8 4 Passaforni .. j • Lady Furst ..8 2 Yours Truly- 7 1 Ned Cuttle .. 713 Parquet • • J Thcrmidor .. .7. 11 Mishna ’ • J <> Centrepoise 711 Balmenter .. <> Loweiibcrg .. 7 0 Might ■ • < ” Toqlc,V Street 7 0 Jhe Wrecker i 0 Dictate ...75 Spartan .. ‘ Second Innings 7 5 Capricious 7 0

The Wrecker is a probable lion-start-er, and there is also some .doubt about Lady Furst. Arctic King has come into favour since his arrival at Riccarton, and Royal Chief, who raced successfully in Australia this season has been one of the principal fancies since his return to New Zealand. He is a class horse, but -has a big weight, Yours Truly, Centrepoise, Lowenberg and Hunting Cat have all shown impressive form recently. The favoured division may be Yours Truly. Royal Chief and Arctic. King. 2.42.

Welcome Stakes, two-year-olds, five furlongs.—Blue Xiibey, Kurawhi, Miss Hhlibmet, Absolve, Doria, Locrian, Enrich, Lockheed, Don’t Forget, Shikari, Gold Flight. Of the ten youngsters carded for the Welcome Stakes, Enrich, Doria, Gold Flight and Absolve (an unlikely starter) are the only winners. Form points to Enrich, Doria and Gold -Flight. '3.22. Apprentices’ Handicap, o,ne mile. — Auctor 9.0, Anita Foe 8.8, Merry March, Prudent Prince 8.7, Night Pal 8.3, Lady Rosette 8.2,. Counterlunch 8.0, Great Legion 7.13, Kobi 7.8, Guspini, Phil, Stylist, Princess Minerva, Sceptre, Twenty Grand,. Pink Lad, Benevolent, Sir Amyas, Chit Chat 7.7. Auctor (last year’s winner), Anita Foe (Wellington winner), Merry March; Prudent Prince, Counterlunch, Great Legion, Pink Lad and Night Pal have all shown form, and the .public may select Anita Foe, Auctor and Merry March.

4.7. STEWARDS’ HANDICAP, of £BOO. Six furlongs.

Paper'Slipper 9 5 Density ..7 7 Nighfealm .. 811 Bakalianga ..7 7 Beaulivre .8 10 Globe Trotter 7 6 Gav Chou .. 8 10. Paper Noto ..75 •Disdain .. 8 8 Sleeveless ..73 Toro Koura 8 3 Skyrena ..7 0 Strip .. 7 8 Dark Flight ..7 0

Beaulivre is likely to be l a strongfavourite for the Stewards’ Handicap. He is a first-class colt, and a quick beginner. Nightcalm won 1 at Motukarara and Sleeveless and Globe Trotter at Wellington, while Disdain, Rakahanga, Strip, Toro Koura and Paper Slipper all have the speed to win this race. It should be an even betting race, outside Beaulivre, and the final summing up may be in favour of Beaulivre, Globe Trotter and Sleeveless. 4.52.

Riccarton Handicap, nine furlongs.— Queen, of Song, Sovereign Lady 8.11, Lady Montana 8.10, Trench Fight, Wardress 8.7, Baran 8.4, Dainty Sue 8.1, Swordstick 8.0, Norseman 7.13, Queen DOrothy 7.12, Wine Card 7.11, Studley Royal 7.8, The Wrecker, Rebel Lad, Master Dingle 7.7. A majority of those engaged in the Riccarton Handicap have recent, form which suggests their having a chance, and it should be a splendid betting race. Wardress, Sovereign Lady (in her recent track work), Baran, Swordstick, AVine Card and Lady Montana have the best credentials, and the best supported may be Wardress Sovereign Lady and Baran.
