[by CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.]
BALBOA, November 2
It is reliably stated that the German tanker Emmy Friederich wa; sunk by her own crew in the Caribbean Sea to avoid capture by a British cruiser. The Panama correspondent of the “New York Times" reports that the cruiser encountered the tanker on October 24, running without lights. The tanker claimed to be neutral and when asked why it was darkened, replied that it was having trouble with its lights. It was then ordered to stop. It did not comply, but replied that it was having trouble with its engines. The cruiser’s next order, however, was obeyed, and a hoarding . party found the tanker’s crew standing by the lifeboats. The German captain remarked: “Well, gentlemen, there is nothing you can do. We have opened the seacocks and smashed the vales, so you had better take to the boats.” The cruiser took the crew on board and stood by until the tanker sank.
