PAPAROA MINE

FORTY-SIX MEN DISMISSED. For the. past three months, the Paparoa mine has been experiencing a lean period, due to lack of orders, and the management has now served notice of dismissal on 46 members of its staff, the notices to take effect from November 17. As about 100 men are employed at the mine, the staff will be-reduced by almost 50 per cent.' Most of the men affected are single.After receiving a deputation while visiting the West Coast.this week, the Minister of Mines, Mr. Webb, gave ail assurance that he would find work for all men- whom it was found necessary to. dismiss, He said that .some men would be placed on the Buller railway;, and. others in South Westland.

It is expected that the men remaining in tlie' employ of the company will be. able to work full-time, but the management stated to-day, that there was no indication as to when the present total number of miners would be eifiployed again. If the Ohekaka iron works were proceeded with, and started production, there would be a much-increased demand for Paparoa coal, but it is considered that this work will not he pushed ahead until world conditions become more settled.
