The Greymouth police received word, to-day, that a man named Jack Young, employed by the Public Works Department, had died suddenly at Jackson’s Bay yesterday. SeniorSergeant G. F. Bonisch said that these were all the particulars the polie'e had received, though it was believed that deceased had a sister residing at Bulls. The body was brought by aeroplane, to-day, to Hokitika, where an inquest will be held.

New regulations governing pedestrian crossings were announced as pending some time ago, but, according to a communication received by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce from the Commissioner of Transport, he is at present unable to advise it of the approximate date when the new regulations will be put into effect. It then pointed out that at the time of writing markings in instances had ceased to be legal pedestrian crossings.

Barnes of Bluff, has made it possible for petrol engines to be started up immediately on Diesel oil. An experiment has been carried out on a 40-year-old Kelvin engine at Bluff. Fed on Diesel oil, the engine starts up without priming and the combustion is such that a handkerchief held in the exbsrtist is not discoloured in the slightest. No structural alterations or even minor adjustments were made to the engine to enable the invention to be applied.
