BUSINESS MEN’S ASSOCIATION. £ t [OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] j 1 HOKITIKA, October 19. t The Executive of the Hokitika Busi- ] ness Men’s Association met last evening. The Chairman (Mr W. H. Stop- i forth) presided over the following members: —Messrs W. J. Bruce, J. L. Turner, K. W. Reece, A. Alexander, A. H. Lawn, C. L. Brice, G. Oliver, and W. J. Richards. Mr J. N. Robinson, on behalf of the Kanieri Electric Company, put forward two suggestions for the improvement of the window lighting of the I business area. —It was resolved tc i make inquiries as to the number of members prepared to take on the scheme. A circular from the Department of Industries and Commerce was discussed, and it was decided to order a quantity of material advertising New Zealand industry for distribution among the members. A. suggestion to go into the matter of advertising local business on the theatre screens was adopted, and’ the secretary was instructed to obtain the necessary particulars. Considerable discussion took place on the subject of the Christmas and New Year holidays.—lt was decided to consider observing Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve on the Saturdays, and have the late nights on the Saturday nights. In view of several suggestions, it was decided 1 consideration also be given to reverting to the general Wednesday half-holiday and Saturday late night. The matter of the Association looking after the interests of any member called up in active service was considered. It was resolved Quit the Association set up a’ special committee for the purpose of acting as trustees for any member called up on active service. It was decided to ’ write to the Borough Council, offering the co-operation of the Association in any move in the way of a civic farewell to men leaving on active service. WESTLAND RUGEY SUB-UNION. A meeting of the Westland Rugby Football Sub-Union to wind up matters for the season, was held' last evening, Mr F. McGregor presiding in the absence of the president, Mr S. P. Moore. There were present: Messrs W. H. Stopforth, A. Stevenson. MDavidson, W. J. Richards, S. Havill. G. - Shaw and A. H. Lawn. Apologies for t absence were received from Messrs L. Harper, W. Kearns, B. Kelly, and the - President. A motion of condolence with the , relatives of the late Mr W. Deere was t passed. The Secretary reported an approximate debit balance for the season ol £2O, owing mainly to the fact that the " gate takings had been the worst, on • record. A vote of two guineas was made to Mrs J. Coulson, for her services in washing and repairing playing togs. s After a discussion on the distribur lion of trophies, the meeting adr journed.
