CHINESE SUCCESS
ATTACK ON JIANG CHOW. [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] CHUNGKING, October 16. It is officially reported that the Chinese army attacked Hangchow, killing numerous Japanese soldiers and destroying a power plant, an ammunition dump, and the headquarters of the puppet regime. They also destroyed railway tracks and dynamited bridges, severing communication with Shanghai, and established Chinese control in the surrounding countryside. JAPANESE MINISTER. TOKIO, October 17. Mr. Tatsuo Kawai, former Foreign Office spokesman, has been appointed Minister-at-large in America and Europe. It is assumed that ho will attempt to smooth the way for a Chinese, Japanese and Manchukuoan military and economic bloc.
