JAPANESE ARMY

ATTITUDE TO AMERICANS. [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] (Received October 18, 1 p.m.) NEW YORK, October 17. Hallet Abend, “New York Times” Shanghai correspondent, submitted a series of questions to high Japanese Army circles, to which he received the following replies: What is the future policy of the Japanese Army toward numerous’ American and other third Power missionaries in the interior of China? —New orders were recently issued to commanders, especially to safeguard such, and a bureau lias been established to investigate losses and to arrange possible compensation. What would be the Japanese reaction, if an additional 10,000 American marines were ordered to Shanghai?— We cannot see any reason to object to the reinforcement of marines, should the United States deem it necessary for the maintenance of peace and order after the withdrawal of the British and French forces. This reply makes it possible that American marines will take over the defence of the sectors in the l International Settlement at present held by the British and French forces.
