PUBLIC WORKS WAGES

INCREASE ANNOUNCED. [per press association;] WELLINGTON, October IS. A general increase in wages on public works of lid per hour, on the basis of a-40-hour week, has been made as from October, according to a statement by the Minister of Finance (Mr. Nash). Where married quarters are not provided, married men will be paid an additional lid per hour, or an increase of 10/- per week altogether. The increase represented 5/- per week, said Mr. Nash, and would bring (he minimum wage on public works up to £4/5 per week. The. reason for the increase was to make the wages on public works comparable with the wages fixed for other industries by the Arbitration Court.
