COBDEN NOTES

[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Glorious weather prevailed for the opening of the Cobden Bowling Club’s season on Saturday. Visitors were present from other clubs in the district. The President (Mr W. Kells) welcomed the visitors, and declared the green open for the season, Mrs T. Gilmour throwing up the first jack and Mrs Kells rolling the first bowl. Messrs T. Bowes (Runanga), R. San- [ som (Karoro) and F. Denton (Greymouth) wished the club a successful season. The women’s committee provided afternon tea. Much of the success of the club is due to the secretary, Mr J. Stokes, who since last season, has beeh mainly responsible for the laying-down of a women’s croquet green, which will be opened some time next month. During the afternoon a match was played between teams picked by the President and the Vice-President. The followihg were the results, the President’s teams being mentioned first: —Flood, Kells, Henderson, Armstrong (s) 13; Hillhouse, Derbyshire, King, Warburton (s) 25. Stokes, Anderson, Sharp, Bowes (s) 14; Glen, Washer, R. Smith, Denton (s) 27. Douglas, Booth, Latimer, Barnes (s) IS; L. Jackson, Gilmour, Maskill, Robertsoh (s) 15. Harrison, Turley, Seddon, Newton (s) 16; Hamilton, W. Jackson, Boddy, Truscott (s) 19. On Sunday afternoon the Greymouth Pipe Band presented a programme of pipe music consisting of marches reels, strathspeys and waltzes, on the school ground. There was a fair attehdance. The band was in charge of Drum-Major O. McLean and PipeMajor W. Boyle. On Saturday evening the Cobden Fire Brigade held its annual fancy dress party for children, There was a large attendance, and the fancy dresses were many and varied. The judges were Mr and Mrs T. Jones, and the music was supplied by Mrs M. Mead, while Fireman C. Brailsford acted as M.C.
