TO-DAY’S RACING NEWS

Galloping

MEETINGS TO COME. October 19, 21 —Poverty Bay. October 19, 21, 23—Wellington. October 21, 23 —Gore. October 23 —Poverty Bay Hunt. October 23—Wavorley. October 23—North Canterbury. October 23—Waikato Hunt. October 28 —Banks Peninsula. October 28 —Rangitikei. RICCARTON NOTES. CANDIDATES FOR TRENTHAM [special to “star.”] CHRISTCHURCH, October 15. The conditions at Riccarton during the past week have been favourable for training operations, but the tracks have become hard on top, and the much-desired change in the weather has not materialised. A strong team assisted at the South Canterbury meeting on Saturday, and practically every stable will be represented over the coming Labour Day week-end. A good class contingent will be at the Wellington Spring meeting, and a few horses will make the trip to Gore, these including two likely winners in Roy Bun and Flame Queen, and the stay-at-home horses will be accommodated at the North Canterbury annual fixture on the Rangiora racecourse, x The team for Trentham will include Wild Fox. who will be the only two-year-old from the south in the Taita Handicap, and Kinsman, who is the only southerner in the Wellesley Stakes. It is some years since the South Island did not make a bold bid for honours in the classic, and Kinsman, who has not yet raced, cannot be expected to offer much opposition to the North Island juveniles.

Haughty Winner,' Trench Fight, Winning Rival, Rabble and Rebel Lad are Riccarton horses in the Wainui Handicap, but Rabble is in by mistake and is to start in the big handicap. Haughty Winner would benefit by his race at Washdyke on Saturday, and his liking for the Trentham course will no doubt prompt investors to support him. Trench Fight and Winning Rival will be bracketed. The former has not done any good for a long time, and Riccarton visitors will follow the bracket mainly through Winning Rival, whose win in the Dunedin Guineas was easily gained, but was nevertheless not impressive owing to it being necessary to ride her hard for over half of the journey. She will not need to require the same tactics on Thursday, when the company will be infinitely stronger than at Dunedin. (Rebel Lad ran well for a mile in the mile and a-quarter race at Washdyke, but is not yet ready for a race like that at Trentham. Haughty Winner and Winning Rival should do the best of the visitors.

Grey Night, engaged in the Rimutaka Hack Handicap, is a speedy 'three-year-old, and is a remarkably good beginner. He is by Nightly from the dam of Grey Honour, and is capable of leading Thursday’s field for at least the greater part of the journey. Dictate disappointed at Washdyke, but the ground there was against him, and he is certain to do better on the more roomy and more yielding Trentham track. He is very well just now, and it will be surprising if he does not win some money on the trip. Rabble is handily placed with 7.4, but is hardly at present at any rate up to this standard. Wagner, on the same mark, has only to race up to his ability to be dangerous. His success at the Grand National meeting cannot be overlooked. Parquet has been galloping well of late, but does not appeal in a strong field like that of Thursday. Dictate appears to , have the best prospects. With Density and Gay Parade in the Shorts Handicap, Riccarton claims a speedy pair, while Disdain, although trained at Awapuni, is Christchurch-owned. Density had every chance of winning at Washdyke, but was in trouble over a furlong from the post, and Toro Koura had no trouble in beating her. There is no doubt about her speed, and she has raced well previously at Trentham, but her stamina will have to improve a lot to give her a chance. Gay Parade, on the other hand, can combine speed with stamina. He is a smart beginner, and has run out seven furlongs well when he was not in the same order as at present. Riccarton visitors have every reason to prefer him to Density.

RACES AT WASHDYKE. WARDRESS AND TORO KOURA TIMARU, October 15. The Spring fixture of the South Canterbury Jockey Club, held on the Washdyke course on Saturday, was a J pronounced success. There was a satisfactory attendance, and the totalisator turnover of £14,468 was up to expectations. There was no meetinglast year as the General Election fell on the scheduled day, and Saturday’s programme was the same as held on the' second day of the 1937 Spring meeting, when £15,355/10/- was handled. The track was in fast order, and the firm surface no doubt accounted for the failure of some well-fancied horses which had previously raced on more yielding ground. [special to “star.”] CHRISTCHURCH, October 14. The South Canterbury Jockey Club’s Spring fixture was a success in every way, and gave further indication that the racegoing public are prepared to support racing so long as the clubs will carry-on with attractive programmes. The Hurdles:

The opening event, the Otaio Hurdles, was won by Jewish Lad, who has won two hurdle races since being trained by J. McLean, of Riccarton. He was again ridden by H. Hibberd, who has only ridden in three hurdle races, all on Jewish Lad, and has won two, a most unusual percentage for a beginner. The well fancied Fundy Bay, who was narrowly beaten by Travenna at Geraldine, crashed at the first fence through taking off too far, and his rider, E. Pinn, was sent to hospital suffering from slight concussion. Jewish Lad and Ballad disputed the lead throughout, and the former gradually got the better of his rival over the last two furlongs. Mount Vai, on ground against him, struggled on into third place, clear of King Icel, who may have been closer but for a bad jump two fences from home. Ballad also misjudged this fence and lost some ground, but in any case would not have beaten the winner. Counter Lunch:

Counter Lunch was expected to be in strong demand for the Spring Stakes, but owing to being off colour on Friday, was allowed to go out fourth choice. She and the second choice, Lord Midas, both by Iliad, were always in front, and fought out a close tussle, but Counter Lunch stayed on the better. The favourite, Queen Beth, finished fast into third place, two lengths in front of Pink Lad and Hearth together. Stirring Performance: Wardress, backed down to less than even money, was responsible for a stirring performance to win the Teschemaker Handicap. She was well back three furlongs from home, and her supporters had reason to think her chance of ever getting up was remote, but as soon as the field straightened up for home, she made a fast run up to the leaders, and with a furlong to go, had actually gained the front. The rest was easy for her, and her rider did not have to call on her Ito win from .Swordstick, who was one of the leading division throughout. Thermidor executed a sound effort to get up for third from Spartan, who assisted by The Wrecker, acted as pacemaker throughout, and helped towards the fast time recorded. Gay Rebel and The Wrecker were next. Disappointments were Dictate and Balmenter, who evidently felt the effects of the hard' track. Decisive Win:

The production of Phenomenal in the Tycho Hack Handicap, in preference to his engagement in the open sprint, encouraged him to be made favourite for the former, and when he entered the straight in front, his prospects looked good, but both King Gustavo and Chirp overhauled him early m the run home, Chirp carrying on for a decisive win from King Gustavo, who as easily beat Improvident and Phenomenal. Improvident came from the middle of the field to beat. Phenomenal on the post, while Princess Minerva finished fast wide out to be almost on terms with the favourite. The winner is one of the few of Full Feather’s progeny racing, his dam being Lucy Locket, who won several races in the south. Flame Queen was one of the rear division for most of the way. This was not her form, and she will do better at Gore.

Asia Unlucky: L. J. Ellis, who rode Wardress and Chirp, narrowly missed the hat trick when his mount Asia was beaten in the last stride by Merry March- Asia followed the speedy Guspini into the straight, and when the latter ran off the track, Asia shot through on the fence, and looked to have the race in safe keeping until Merry March put in a late appearance. Ellis rightly let up on Asia when victory seemed assured, but was unable to get his mount going again when Merry March tackled her. Merry March paid another big dividend, and was ridden by R. Gaddy, who resumed riding at the meeting after an absence following his Occident at Nelson in May last. Dranoel worked his way into third place nearing home, just beating Dinah Dhu, with Master Dingle next. Won Comfortably; According to the machine Density was considered the best proposition of the day in the Flying Handicap, but strangely enough Toro Koura. was better supported on the place machine. Density got away smartly and was

soon streaking away in front, but Epic joined her after two furlongs, and this pair entered the straight well clear of Toro Koura and Lady Leigh. Density left Epic early in the run home, but then commenced to weaken, and Toro Koura did not require much pressure to draw past her, and to beat her comfortably. Lady Leigh was a good third, a length in front of the veteran Silver Streak, who was sent back to lust in the first furlong. Manawai’s Success:

Manawai, owned by R. Townley, and driven by one of his sons, had a close victory in the Washdyke Trot after a sustained struggle with the wellbacked Star Ace. Manawai was one of the leaders throughout, and when Star Ace drew up to him a furlong from home, it appeared as if he would surrender his position, but although Star Ace drew level at one stage, Manawai hung on for a. head margin. In another stride Star Ace would have been the winner. Swift Lady, always prominent, was a close third, a length in front of the favourite, Club King, who failed to sustain a promising effort in the straight. Easy Win: Accountant justified his favouritism for the Hadlow Handicap by a fairly easy win from Shadow Queen, both being in the lead almost throughout the journey. Wainoni Girl came from well back to gain third money from Straight and Marque.

CAULFIELD RACES. HIGH CASTE AVINS GUINEAS. MELBOURNE, October 14. The weather was fine but dull for the opening day of the Victoria Amateur Turf’s Club meeting at Caulfield. Panteon, raced and trained by J. Fryer, finished strongly to win the 1010 Welter. John Dory was a promising third. Pantoon secured third placing's in his previous two starts. Florin won the Debutant Stakes for colts and geldings in the last stride. He cost 300 guineas as a yearling, and was second at Flemington last week. Procyon tried to lead always. Halifax, with a fast-finishing effort, was third. Florin’s trainer, S. Murphy, won the Debutant Stakes previously with Gay Lover. Trueness, the Gimcrack Stakes winner, finished brilliantly in the Debutante Stakes for fillies. She has, had two wins in two starts, and cost' 550 guineas as a yearling. Heart’s Desire ran a good race and Much To Say finished well. High Caste had’ an effortless' victory in the Caulfield Guineas, making his third successive win. He cost 7000 guineas and has won approximately 11,000 in stakes for his present owner. His trainer, J. T. Jamieson, won the Guineas previously with Ammon Ra. Reading tried to lead all the way, but was outclassed in the' final stages. Zonda finished well. Glenfino and Wilson gave fair performances, while Pure Gold was a failure. High Caste has been unbeaten in four starts here.

Respirator enhanced his Caulfield Cup chance by winning the Herbert Power Handicap. He was last early but finished brilliantly and gave his rider, E. Bartie, his third successive win. Rivette, with 211 b less in the Caulfield Cup, pleased by to-day’s effort. as did Donor’s Hill, who finished well. Ortelle’s Star disappointed, and Netherle-a was outclassed. Hilton, owned by the former New Zealander, Mr. AV. R. Kemball. finished brilliantly to win the Toorak Handicap. He was bred in New Zealand. Carpentier put up a good race. Geebung had an interrupted run. and enhanced his Caulfield Cup prospects by bis third placing. Tetreen was a disappointment. The apprentice. Ron Hall, suitered a broken leg as the result of a street accident at Caulfield to-day. Rivette showed slight soreness after his race in the Herbert Power Handicap, but is much improved.
