The retail prices of beef and mutton are to. be increased by the Auckland master butchers, to-morrow. It is stated that butchers are in serious financial difficulties, and that . they have become desperate at delay in obtaining consent from the Price Investigation Tribunal to increase the retail rates. The prices of pork, veal and lamb are unaffected. The butchers state that they had been selling for fully seven -weeks at retail prices, representing a loss of 25/- for every bullock and 7/- for every sheep. The adjustment of beef and mutton prices by Auckland butchers had the approval of the Price Tribunal, said Mr Picot, when interviewed in Auckland, to-day. He said he wanted to rectify the impression, conveyed by the statement given by the Auckland master butchers, that the increase in the retail rates of beef and mutton was being made without the knowledge of the Government. He said that such arbitrary action would be both unnecessary and illegal, and would have led to the Auckland butchers being prosecuted. Special consideration’ circumstances obtaining in Auckland, was given by the Price Tribunal to the where retail prices had not followed the rise in the wholesale market.
