MAN CRUSHED BY ROCK
AMURI TUNNEL FATALITY [pee press association.] CHRISTCHURCH, September 7. Fatal injuries were suffered by Vernon Englefield Willis married, 32, of Taratuhi, who was caught by a fall of papa rock in the Amuri tunnel on the South Island Main Trunk railway line, about 5.30 p.m. on Wednesday. Dr. R. L. Withers, of Kaikoura, was summoned, but Willis died a few minutes after the accident. Willis, with two other men, was engaged on the erection of props to pievent rock from falling into the. tunnel. He was working in the middle. Suddenly he called out to his woi’kmates, “Look out!’’ and before he could move a block of papa roc k> weighing about lOcwt. to 12cwt, tell down and pinned him underneath. His workmates, with the assistance of two men who were working lower down, managed to get the block off him, but Willis survived for only a few minutes. ...
