Beatson’s Mount: Halley, who is to contest the Duke of Gloucester Cup at New Plymouth, will be ridden by Mr. G. G. Beatson.

Weak Naming: . Among the list of names claimed during the last week is Leg Before Wicket, a. yearling grey colt by Theio from Duck’s Egg.

For Australia: Gold Salute has done well since he won at the National meeting, and is to be taken to Australia next week for Spring racing. A. E. Ellis will ride him whenever he is available.

In Doubt: Royal Star 11. who went tor a hack price at Trentham as there is a distinct doubt about his soundness, has so far been standing up well to his work on the Hastings tracks. He will be a bargain if he does not go wrong.

Valvern: The Ellerslie-trained Valvern left on Wednesday for New Plymouth to compete at the combined meeting. Valvern, who is by Vaals, is engaged in the live-furlong novice events. She has an abundance of speed and may be capable of running prominently on the turning track.

Jumpers at Riccarton: Pol Roger (G. Linton) and Bit o’ Blue (R. Register) were companions over six hurdles at Riccarton yester-

day, the former giving a dashing display for a novice, easily outjumping and outpacing her mate. Like all the Polazel stock, Pol Roger shows marked ability as a jumper, and her later exploits will be attended with much interest.

English Jockeys: Up to July 15, G. Richards had ridden 89 winners in England during this year, with 71 seconds and 42

thirds from 449 mounts. His winning percentage, 19.82, was easily the best among the leading half-dozen jockeys. His nearest rival, W. Nevett, had been successful 45 times in 334 mounts and M. Beary was a close third with 44 wins in 371 rides.

Nea Lap’s Progeny: The New York “Herald” records an attractive success by The Wind in a race over six furlongs and a-half for three-year-old fillies run at Aqueduct on July .1. The Wind, who is owned by Mr. J. H. Whitney, is by The Porter from Nea Lap, sister to Phar Lap. A colt, Poet’s Corner, by Royal Minstrel, from Nea Lap, in Boyd Rochfort’s stable in England, has yet to race, but is expected soon to earn distinction.

Beaulivre’s Reappearance: Beaulivre is getting through sprinting tasks at Hastings in preparation for his race at New Plymouth next week. At 8.6 he has been given the same weight as;Amigo 12 months ago

in the same race. On that occasion Orate had 9.0, but did not start, the race being won by Clessamor, 8.6, from Prince Acre, 8.12, and Pakanui, 8-10. This year Orate has 8.9, the topweight being Black Thread, with 9.3. Beaulivre’s 8.6 over six furlongs at this stage of the season represents 71b. over weight for age.

Another Beau Pere: The Te Awamutu owner Mr. E. H. Cucksey, notes that his colt, Beau Leon, by Beau Pere from Lady Bede, the dam of Galilee, was doing splendidly under the guidance of A. Cook. It is intended to race him in the Debutante Stakes at Wanganui. Beau Leon who is one of the nicest-looking colts about, will be accompanied on the trip by Surmise, the half-brother to King Rey, who gave indications last season of being more than useful as a three-year-old.

By Posterity: Although he has not been up as long as the majority of two-year-olds, the colt by Posterity from Mirabelle 11. in I. Tucker’s stable is beginning to make some progress in his work. He is a big powerful youngster and moves along with a good easy style, which suggests that he will gallop fast later on. He was purchased at the Trentham yearling sales by Mr. R. Cuthbert for 220 guineas, and is a halfbrother to Theo, who won the A.J.C. Derby and the Caulfield Guineas. For Outside Sires: Two of the Stonyhurst mares, Riv-, airy and Wild Hind, were shipped to Hastings this week to visit Buland-| shar. The former produced Winning I Rival to Bulandshar, and Wild Hind has had the dintinction of producing a good one to Winning Hit, in Wild Chase, who will do stud duty at Stonyhurst this season. Fast Passage will visit Phaleron Bay at Westmere, and the young mare, Competition, by Polazel from Rivalry, will be mated with the same horse, while Fracas will visit the Blandford horse, Broiefort, who is also at Westmere. Ball Dress, dam of Night Dress, will be mated with Solicitor General. Youngsters at Ellerslie: The two-year-olds, a colt by Muskatoon from Elope and a. filly by Lord Warden from Pledge, are being pul through the initial stages of their education at Ellerslie by F. Fergus. The Musketoon colt is a good-looking youngster, with plenty of size, and be has good breeding, his dam being by Chrysolaus from Secret Wedding, by William the Silent—Wedding Present (imp.), by Trenton, a. line which hitsproduced many good winners. The: Lord Warden filly, who is closely re-] hated to Pakanui and Peter Beckford,] has the appearance of one who might! come to hand quickly. The youngsters] will race in the colours of the estatei of the late M. Steinberg. ] Severe Losses: ] Mr. Martin Tims, of Te Awainutu.l suffered a severe loss recently in the] deaths of his valuable brood marcs,! Prodice and Te Broney. An effort is I being made to rear, by hand, a filly' foal from Prodice by Mr. Standfast. Prodice was a first-class mare on the race track, and at the stud she pro-

• duced Callisto to General Latour in 1.932, and in the following year, to the same sire, she fouled Gallio. She was sent to Australia, in July, .1934, and was mated with Heroic. Tilts progeny was Te Hero, who is now in Sydney. To Broney was a nine-year-old mare by Kilbroney from Te Papapa, by Marble Arch, and last season was her first year at the stud. Luck of Racing: i For the first three months of the present Hat racing' season in England, by an extraordinary turn of Fortune’s wheel, the Aga Khan, who owns the largest racing stable in England, had not won a, race of any description but by the middle of last, month, he had been represented by three winners of live races, who had secured the .handsome total of £8363/5/-. The most important of these winners was Stardust, who ran second in the richest two-year-old event of the season, the National Breeders’ Produce Stakes, but the colt was awarded the race when the .Rose of England colt was disqualified for interference. The Aga Khan in the last ten years of his racing in England has won over £378,000 and seven times he has headed the list of winning owners. GIMCRACK STAKES. LONDON, August 24. The Gimcrack Stakes resulted: Tantmieux 1, Stardust 2, Hippius 3. Fourteen started. Won by a length; four lengths between second and third. Trotting MEETINGS TO COME August 26 —Auckland.
