Miss L. Thorpy arrived yesterday, from Wellington. .

Messrs AV. T. Ogilvie, J. Gilbert and J. S. Robertson returned yesterday from Christchurch.

A Tokio cablegram stated that yesterday a Salvation Army Brigadier, Annie Smythe, of Wellington, one of the most picturesque figures in Tokio for the last quarter of a century, sailed for New Zealand.

A Sydnej 7 cablegram announced that Dr. AV. Stewart Ziele, a prominent dentist, has died from injuries received in a motor-car accident. Dr. Ziele, who was aged 58, was born in Dunedin.

Mr. R. G. Stevenson, of the Union Bank, will leave to-morrow on transfer to Waimate. He has been replaced at Greymouth by Mr. W. J. Freddy, of Ashburton. Mr Stevenson was farewelled yesterday afternoon by Greymouth clients of the Bank, • and presented with a wallet of notes. The presentation was made by Mr. T. E. Coates, who referred to the efficiency of Mr. Stevenson, and his tact and courtesy in dealing with clients, and wished him every success in his promotion.

The death occurred at the Christchurch Hospital, this morning, of Mr. Thomas James Furlong, aged 69 years. JDeceased, wjio was a native of Hokitika, had been in ill-health for some time. He had been a resident of Christchurch for the past six years, but resided on the West Coast for the greater part of his life being, at different times, proprietor of the Rapahoe, Recreation (Greymouth), Ngahere amt Kokatahi hotels. In his younger days he was a keen athelte, having represented Hokitika and West Coast at Rugby football, and also successfully competing in springing. He was a member of the Star of the West Druids’ Lodge. 'He is survived, by his wife and four daughters, Misses Kathleen, Mary and Ellen, and Mrs. Fitzsimmons (all of Christchurch) and one son, Thomas (Ngahere). He also, leaves one sister, Mrs. J. Grace (Wellington). The funeral will take place at Greymouth to-morrow morning.
