INANGAHUA COUNCIL

REEFTON, August. 24. The monthly meeting of the Inangahua County Council was held to-day. Present: Messrs J. O’Regan (chairman), F. Seawright, T. Watson, J. McGregor, P. O’Regan, W. B. Blackadder, G. B. Mclnroe, W. Clayton and B. Mirfin.

Letters were received from Messrs L. E. Morgan, I. Patterson and Son and the District Public Trustee notifying sales of property and asking for amendment to the rolls.—lt was agreed thatt he rolls be amended as requested. In connection with an application from Mr. F. Thorn, secretary, Waiuta Sports Club, for a grant for the school children’s treat it w r as decided that enquiries be made in regard to the funds for such grants. The secretary of the Grey Electric Power Board wrote asking for particulars of properties in the proposed addition to the board’s area. —It was resolved that the matter be referred to the clerk for attention. A letter was received from Mr. Lee Martin (Minister of Lands) stating that he was obtaining a. report on an area of land, between Ikamatua and Snowy and Big Rivers, whi’dh might he suitable for agricultural purposes. A letter was received from Mr. P. C. Webb in regard to utilisation of the bulldozer to deal with river erosion at! the properties of Messrs Smith, O’Don-1 noli and Brazil. i Mi’s. W. H. Betts wrote in regard to the condition of the suspension bridge at Oweka— Cr. P. O’Regan moved and Cr. Mclnroe seconded that Mrs Betts be advised that the en-i gineer was attending to the matter. A request from Messrs J. Findlay and A. Halloran asking that the road to coal mine be metalled was

granted. Letters were received from the Engineer in Chief, Public Works Department and from Alexander Mines Ltd. in regard to bridging of fords on the road to the Alexander mine. It was decided on the motion of Cr. Mclnroe seconded by Cr. Mirfin that the Council contribute £lOO towards the cost of a bridge. Crs. McGregor and Seawright dissented. The Inspector of Stock wrote regarding the Government subsidy for

the eradication of noxious weeds. —It was decided that the Chairman, with Crs. Watson, Clayton, and Mirfin constitute a committee to control the local scheme, and to meet the Inspec-

tor on September 25. On the motion of Cr. Seawright, seconded by Cr. Blackadder, it was decided that the matter of completing the plan of the Reefton Centennial Memorial be left in the hands of the Engineer. • A request from the Roefton Fire Brigade, asking that fire plugs be installed on Strand Reserve was referred to the Engineer for attention. I It was resolved that th© proposal to bridge or clear Mai-Mai Creek be left to the Engineer for further inspection.. Cr. Clayton moved and Cr. Mclnroe seconded, that sluicing operations at Millerton Road be stopped, unless a suitable bond for repair of the road is entered into.—Carried.

The Council passed motions of condolence with the McMahon family, the family of the late G. T. White, and the family of the late C. Walshe. The County Clerk reported on his recent, visit to Wellington as the Council’s delegate to the Counties’ Conference. While in Wellington he had interviewed Mr J. Skinner, member for the district, who had, in company with the speaker, approached the Public Works Department regarding tar-sealing of Waiuta streets, river erosion at Lesters, and the provision of bridge accommodation on the Alexander- mine road. At the conference the remit regarding the allowance of postal voting for county e'ections had been recommended, and the insurance scheme for counties, as propounded by the Association to be operated on a co-operative basis, was thoroughly discussed, and a decision made thajt all local bodies should be further circularised on the matter.
