The early express from Wellington, which usually arrives at 6.55 a.m., was an hour and a-half late in arriving, while the Limited express, usually here at. 9.30 a.m., was an hour and a quarter behind schedule. SEAMAN FATA-LLY INJURED. AUCKLAND, August 23. A young seaman, A. McKenzie, died in hospital early this morning, as. the result of head injuries sustained when struck by a girder, while working in No. 3 hold of .the Rangitata, about midnight. After attention by the ship’s doctor, he was hoisted from the hold in a sling, and admitted to hospital. PEDESTRIAN KILLED. WELLINGTON, August 22. While crossing the parade at Island Bay at. 6.30 this evening, Vivian Claude Parker, of Devonshire Road, Miramar, married, with one child, was struck by a motor-car and suffered head injuries from which he died almost immediately. Parker was a barman employed at the Shamrock Hotel. CANVASSER CHARGED. AUCKLAND, August 23. An Auckland insurance canvasser, Eric Stanley Watts, 37, who was missing for five months, and was arrested on a fruit farm at Motucka, on Sunday last, appeared in the Police Court to-day, before Mr. Levien, S.M., and was charged that, on January 17, he obtained £173 from Thomas Arthur Taylor, by falsely representing that he was authorised by the Temperance and General Assurance Society to sell ( a surrendered policy that was actually held by the firm mentioned, whereas in fact no such policy existed. On the application of the police, Watts was remanded, by consent, to September 17. SALESMAN’S FOLLY. WELLINGTON, August 23. Eric Neville Hill, 27, was charged to-day with theft at Christchurch, on August 13, by failing to account to J. T. Christie for £25 received as a deposit from a client, on a car he demonstrated for sale. Hill did not appear alt work on the following day, nor did he inform his employer that he had' received the deposit. He was located later in Wellington. Counsel said .that the offence was committed more through insensate folly than criminal intent. Accused took too much liquor with a party of Aiistralians, and' next morning woke up in a strainge hotel, and found he had lost his money. Unfortunately, he also lost his bead, and attempted to run away. I-Ie was placed on probation for two years.
