BRITISH COAL SUPPLIES

CONTROL IN WAR-TIME

[BRITISH OFFICIAL WIRELESS.]

RUGBY, July 17

In view of the vital importance of coal in war-time, comprehensive plans are being prepared in consultation by those concerned for the maintenance and production of coal in wartime and the control of the distribution and price of coal, coke, and manufactured fuel.

Outlining the plans in the House of Commons, the Under-Secretary for Home Affairs (Mr. Geoffrey Lloyd) said the-control of supples and pithead prices would be exercised through the existing coal marketing schemes, and arrangements had been made to deal with the control of supplies in the consuming districts as well as at the point of production. A system of priorities would be established to ensure supples of coal for essential industries, and a scheme for regulating supplies of coal gas and electricity to domestic and other small consumers would be administered through the local authorities. Mr. Lloyd added that the necessary officers had been appointed and the organisation could, if required, be brought into immediate operation.
