SUBSTANTIAL INCREASES

In a speech at Folkestone, Loid Samuel said that although the Government had promised in a White Paper issued in 1936 that there would be no extravagant profits for armament firms from the need of the nation, the results appeared to be very different. He cited the shipbuilding firm ot Cammell, Laird and Company, which in 1935 paid a dividend of 3.3 per cent. The capital of this company was later doubled, and in 1938 it earned a dividend on its doubled capital of 19.7 per cent, and paid 10 per cent. r Tho naval shipbuilding firm o>Yarrow and Company, Ltd., in 1935 paid a dividend of 10 per cent. In 1938 it earned 34.6 per cent and paid 20 per cent. The Fairey Aviation Company in 1935 paid 5 per cent, on .a capital of £500,000. Last year, on a capital of £1,000,000 it paid' 15 per cent.
