BLACK’S POINT SCHOOL

CONSOLIDATION REFUSED. The Nelson Education ‘Board, at its monthly meeting yesterday, received advice from the Minister of Education that, although ho was of the opinion that a small school received many advantages from consolidation with a large school, in the case of Black’s Point he was not prepared to go against the wishes of the parents concerned. The Board decided to erect a new two-roomed school at Black’s Point, and the secretary’s action in asking that it be given precedence on the building list was endorsed. A grant of £2O was made to the Alexander River Committee, towards clearing a site for the new school. The Canterbury Education Board advised that Punakaiki residents had agreed to the proposed scheme to consolidate with Barrytown. The scheme would start when transport was arranged. It was reported that the board had approved the plans for two new schools at Westport, and had authorised the secretary to make application for grouts to cover the cost of same. The plans provide for two new schools on the most modern lines, and copied from the latest schools being built in England. ... '
