FARMER FOUND DEAD WANGANUI, May 14. Witii a gunshot wound in his chest, a. Rapanui farmer, David James Phillips, 54, was found dead in a paddock on his farm this afternoon. The body was lying beside a fence in which the gun was caught. Phillips had farmed in the Rapanui district, for the last. 20 years.

PRISONER ESCAPES DUNEDIN, May 14

Thomas John Henry Foote, a prisoner on trust, walked out of the yard at the Central Police Station about 3 o’clock yesterday afternoon. Foote was engaged at the time on cleaningup duties, and his gaoler left him for a few minutes. When he returned Foote had departed. The escaped man was sentenced to five months’ impris; onmeiit on Friday oh various charges of theft. ROTARY INTERNATIONAL AUCKLAND, May 15.., Bound for the Rotary international Conference at Cleveland, Ohio, the governors-elect of three Australian districts are through passengers by tlie Monowai. They are Mr. James Mclntyre (New South Wales), Dr. Otto Bayer (Victoria), and Mr. A. R. Kerr (Queensland). Mr. Mclntyre will present Mr. Roosevelt, on behalf of tlie New South Wales Government, with a spe-cially-prepared book, dealing with Australia’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

WORKMAN CRUSHED. AUCKLAND, May 15.

Crushed between the end of an electric travelling crane afid a concrete pillar jutting from a brick wall, Noel Wililam Eden, 23, electrical worker, of Ponsonby, suffered extensive injuries.to-day, when working on business premises in , Street. Part of the hollow brick wall had to be removed, in order to free him. He was tlieii piacdd.,in ; itn ambulance sling and 1 lowered 20 feet to the ground, where he was;.medically attended to. He wait admitted to hospital with a fractured , rib and wrist, and flesh wounds. He did not lose consciousness. His condition is fairly serious.

RHODES SCHOLARS.

“New Zealand Rhodes Scholars are morally bound to return to tiieir own country if there are opportunities awaiting them when they arrive,” said Dr. W. E. Henley, a. former Rhodes Scholar, who returned by the Monowai. He was asked to comment on the statement cabled from Australia, which he was reported, to have riiade in an interview, that he was returning to New Zealand because he felt that Rhodes Scholars were- under .a moral obligation to return to their own countries.

“That is only half of what I said,” stated Dr. Henley. “1 added that obligation existed only if there were opportunities for them.” He said that he knew of several who had returned to the Dominion, only to find that there was nothing for them to do. Rhodes Scholars seemed to return to larger countries, including- South Africa, Canada, and the United States. A fair number were also found in the Commonwealth.

Dr. Henley, who is accompanied by his wife and small son, has returned to discover what opportunities exist.
