It is understood that Commandei’ Byrd and Mr. Lincoln Ellsworth have been asked to consult the Government, concerning plans for an official expedition to the South Polar regions, in order “to fasten down the American claims to the potential resources of the region, fox’ which an international race is developing.” A prominent member of the Government explained that “sooner or later, there must be a conference to settle the question of international claims in the region. The State Department has never recognised these claims, and we want to fasten down our jurisdiction and obtain all possible data on the matter.”
