A stoppage of all city trams A\as threatened for nine o’clock last evening following a dispute over tne ncu time-table, but at the last moment, the Union intimated that a meeting had been abandoned, ioi Tramways Committee to meet the men, to-day. It. is understood that a delicate situation was averted as a. result of departmental intervention. During the afternoon, Mr Hunter, of the Labotti Department, Wellington, arrived by plane, conveying a message from the Minister (Mr Webb), that the Government would view gravely persistence in the strike intention, but the Government was prepared to do what it could for the men. The Union’s grievance is Hint Um new service is too fast, increased motor traffic preventing the cars running to time, also giving no spare time between runs, and cutting down meal time. Mr Hunter will attend the meeting, to-day.
